Would this be the correct place to discuss, what Bob Miller calls 'BAM' - Borrowed & Memorized?

I virtually always work with a borrowed deck, and being a fan of memory I like to employ certain techniques covertly. Just wondering if anyone else does the same?

I believe I've discussed this in another thread, and not sure if this is what you're asking. Anyway...

When I was much, much, younger and I was working with a borrowed deck (I've worked ONLY with borrowed decks for laymen for the last few decades) at one point I'd excuse myself to use the bathroom and casually take the deck with me. I'd memorize the position of every card in the shuffled deck - in minutes - wash my hands and leave the bathroom. Had to be minutes - hours in the bathroom wouldn't quite do it. And, I'd do a few small miracles with the memorized deck.

Haven't done that in decades - not worth the effort - much stronger impromptu card stuff (JAW DROPPERS!) at my arthritic fingertips!

Thanks for the reply Harry,

Yes I was referring to the use of memory in impromptu situations, for example in something like the 'Lazy Man's Card Trick' - memorising ten cards during the course of a poker trick in preparation 'Lazy Mans', that kind of thing.

Or just five cards for 'Mental Rescue' by L. Vosburgh Lyons as another example.

Yes, I did mention that in my book, I think. Instead of setting ten specific cards, I'd often just memorize any ten cards.

Sal Piacente does a nifty thing with the Marlo Opener (Marlo's Miracle Routine I've also seen it called) that can be done with a borrowed, albeit NDO deck.  By memorizing a single card during the routine, he gives the impression that he's memorized the entire deck.  It's pretty hilarious to be honest, and very tricky to pull off.

The Marlo Opener is a great idea, but as you say it needs NDO to set it up. I was thinking more of real memory work being used FASIDU. But when I'm handed a brand new deck, which happens from time to time, I'll do the Marlo set-up as it's an opportunity that's too good to miss. Plus it creates a great impression.

I have both the 'Combo' manuscripts by Karl Fulves, which allows me to continue along similar lines if I want to demonstrate other card memory, card counting type of effects. Harry's 2nd version of Halo Aces is another that comes to mind, which could be shown to demonstrate such things.

All great stuff, but I was thinking more along the lines of the covert use of memory with a borrowed deck.

I have a ACAAN type effect I sometimes do with two shuffled decks. It requires memorising 5 cards. The audience are not aware that I have done this. Both decks are shuffled before I memorise the 5 cards.

This is the sort of thing I was referring to.

Dani DaOrtiz has something he calls C10. With it you can borrow a shuffled deck and you can pretend you have memorized the order of the cards and create amazing effects. Check it out. And yes, you can order it in English...

I got this at his lecture and have been working on it the last couple of weeks. He also talks about this system on his Reloaded DVD set.

Powerful stuff!
