Here's a new idea I came up with the other day.

I'd love to know what you think.

Thanks,
Rick

Very nice!

Gary Kurtz killed me with a similar ending at 4F many years ago. I think it was four silver and four copper trading one by one or something like that. Then Chinese coins came out of nowhere. He had held out throughout the entire routine.

Powerful stuff!!

I'm not sure if Gary's routine is in print?? Maybe someone knows.

Wow Rick!

I really dig your ideas and execution. You always get my wheels turning!

What if--just before you reveal the Chinese coins--you look at the spectators and rattle off a couple lines of Mandarin?

Then you look at the "Yuen" with a double take and say,

Then in English, "Wait... was I just speaking in... Mandarin Chinese?

Google translate provides the audio and--particularly for a musician--memorizing a few phonetic syllables with diphthongs and accents is not too difficult. The lines should be genuine and delivered authentically, so as not to sound disrespectful.

As you hand out the Chinese coins, you say, "Well, I have been reading quite a lot of Chinese philosophy lately... in fact... please cup your hands and hold these"

Your empty hand reaches into your coat pocket and brings out a fortune cookie. With both hands, you crack it open over a spectator's cupped hands and the original coins "fall out" of the cookie. You quickly retrieve them (assuming all three are C/S, it really doesn't matter how they land) simultaneously asking the spectator to extract the fortune and read it... it is also in Mandarin:

Have them show it to you and with a sense of disbelief you translate, "Well now it all makes sense... I'm certain this says, 'Prepare for unexpected change'. Why don't you hang on to the fortune and... if I were you, I'd play those Lotto numbers."

That's a cool idea Stevie!
I don't think I could pull off the chinese, but I like the fortune cookie and reappearance of the original coins.
They aren't all C/S though so dumping them out could definitely work. Watch the initial display again, it's kind of a card move in a way.

Just a bit of arts and crafts surgery on a fortune cookie and you are good to go. Even without the Mandarin, you could still say, "I'm not sure why that happened, but I have been reading a lot of Chinese philosophy lately."

BTW, here's the story behind those lotto numbers:

I think you should stop at the change to Chinese coins. Perhaps the reason why the coins changed to Chinese was because you shook them too hard or something? Also, make sure you practice "getting into" and "getting out of" your routines. There is a tendency these days (not saying you are guilty of it) whereby magicians start a video all set to go and finish dirty and you just know they would really struggle putting the trick into the middle of a set. Hope I'm making sense and please don't take this as meaning you. Just think about it please.
