Hi Everyone,

I've got a challenge that could win one of you a copy of Harry's upcoming book, "And Finally".

I'm currently working on volumes 3 and 4 of the HaLo Project and would love to feature a video of one our members performing and teaching something from one of Harry's books.

I'm specifically looking for items that have likely been overlooked and that haven't been taught on Harry's DVD's.

I'm also looking for the demonstrations to be performed in front of a few spectators.

Please use an HD camera (I'm just using my iPhone 8) and mention in your video that this is for the HaLo Project.

Again, the winner will receive a copy of Harry's new book and will be featured on volume 3 or 4 of the HaLo Project - The Magic of Harry Lorayne.

The contest will end on September 30th.

Good luck!

Rudy

Since the goal is to perform an item that's not on one of Harry's DVDs, I went to L&L and copied all the titles I could find to a spreadsheet. I alphabetized the list and have attached it here. This way it'll be easier to find an item that hasn't already been created as a video.

Here's the LINK

You'll need to be able to open an Excel file.

I converted the file to Word (docx) format for those who can't read the excel file.

Thanks, Mike!

Note: I had to Save the file to a folder before I could read it. Easy-peasy - just letting folks know.

Penn & Teller may even be interested in the HaLo Project or challenge...because - they closed their show last night (the one I saw) with my A Much Better Chance (poker thing) with giant cards.

Rudy,

I think you tend to understate the quality of the video. I've seen much worse.

Anyway, what about sound? Are you using anything beyond the built in microphone on the Iphone. Sound is quite clear, even with my crappy ears.

I still hate streaming, primarily because there are no menus. Why iso is not the preferred format is beyond me. Anyway, BBM provides a screen at the beginning of their videos that show the programs and the time on the disk they begin. You can print a simple screen capture and use it for reference. I keep it as a PDF I can call up anytime.

I hope members really support the project.

Hi Intensely Magic,

I am about to head into a meeting, so I will address some of your other questions a little bit later. I just wanted to mention that these videos are not just streaming. There is a download option on the bottom right-hand side of the screen. Thanks again for supporting this project!

Rudy

I misspoke. I should have said I dislike mp4, Avi, rvmp, etc and any other format that does not allow for a menu, which, I believe, limits me to DVD. It's not a huge deal to suck the file into premier, add a menu and then export an iso, but I guess I'm getting lazy. Actually, the screen capture I mentioned in the prior message makes placing menu markers much quicker.

Take care.....

If each trick is a separate file, then a hyperlinked list is about the same as DVD navigation.

A folder with all the files and the linked list would be very useful. The other way is to do what Murphy's does viz. a PDF with a list of items and where they appear on the timeline.

Someone else mentioned that I should do something as simple as creating a PDF with the timestamps of each demonstration and explanation. I just haven’t made time to do that. I will try to make that happen before the week is out.

Unfortunately, I’ve been producing this project without the benefit of fancy/expensive equipment. All I have is my iPhone camera and a free version of iMovie. I simply don’t have the money to do anything more than what I have produced so far.

I mentioned in the promotional video for volume one, that I hope people can look past the low budget quality and see the value of the effects that I we’re trying to share with folks.

I think you’ll find that they aren’t too bad and worth the small asking price. Anyway, I do understand that DVD is a far better medium.

If the first four volumes do well, I can use the money to buy better equipment for the future installments of this project.

Thanks for your input.

Rudy

The material itself is what's important to me. "Production value" isn't really important is it? Who cares if there's lead in music and cool video effects etc. I just want a good trick! And that's what you're delivering. Well done.

Gareth,

Don't worry about the dates, you still have a month. Rudy said the contest ends on September 30th, we are still in August...

This trick I just posted on You Tube really wouldn't qualify for the contest because it's by Richard Vollmar out of Harry's great Apocalypse but just wanted to post it for those who may like it.

Hi Rudy and everyone,

Well done rready!

Here’s my entry, Thirteen and Thirteen’s Closer from Jawdroppers is a beautiful compilation of all things HL. Whilst I’ll readily admit this isn’t my best technical performance of this blockbuster effect it is the one I’m most happy with in terms of manipulating relaxation and tension.

Some of my main focus recently has been trying to give cues to the audience when to respond. Recently listened to several podcasts and blogs on the subject from performers including Karl Hein, Doc Eason and the wonderful passage on page 7 of The Collected Works of Alex Elmsley Vol I on the subject of controlling the build up and release of tension in the audience. “Laughter is a release of tension, so is applause.”

Hope you enjoy.

Not very important, but just to keep the record straight...among other things - I do not teach to riffle up the tabled deck as you insert the AS and 2S to "catch" the 3S.  I teach my Instant Sandwich Catch - deck stays firmly on table, left thumb simply riffles up as right hand inserts the two face-up spade cards.  Riffling the cards up and letting them fall back down for the "catch" causes the messy result as in the video.

And I've never used that forefinger thing for pulling the 10S out of the deck - never taught that.
As I said, not important. Otherwise all well done.

Well done, Tony and Gareth! Glad to see entries pouring in at last.

My plan is to video my entry next week at the Atlanta Harvest of Magic and submit it shortly thereafter. It'll be coming it at the last minute, but it's my best shot at getting a crowd together, as Rudy prefers. I am going to submit Voice Print, from both BOF and Jawdroppers 2. Great trick, semi-automatic and fun to do. Since I no longer perform it exactly as Harry teaches it, I have gone back to the source material to relearn it the right way for the contest. Oh, and I hope we're not expected to insert the cool graphics like Gareth!

Hope to see more entries in the meantime!

Thank you Harry and Anthony.

Duly noted regarding the Sandwich catch.

The 10 of spades reveal is not taught in Jawdroppers. It is Derek Dingle’s Open Sesame move taught in Doc Eason and Paul Cummin’s Fusillade. To set things straight in Jawdroppers the 9S is revealed with a face-up double cut and the 10S with the one hand table cut that I used for the 9. I honestly can’t remember why I chose to do that. I use the Open Sesame in my MSR. Harry does suggest the Ultra Move as an alternative for the Q reveal but that move still eludes me.

And Anthony.... the ‘cool graphics’ are entirely down to my 10 year old daughter. I have no idea how she put them on the video! Looking forward to your entry. 😀

Just as an aside, few months ago I came across this video of Kiko Pasteur performing at the Castle. A different version of a suit reveal and kicker change effect encompassed in a spellbinding presentation. I contacted him today and he replied and informed me he came up with it 20 years ago based on the Pepe Carroll piece published in 52 Lovers (1988). It is the first seven minutes or so. Please enjoy.

Gareth, you did a great job with this and it’s obvious that you’re audience absolutely enjoyed it! I will include your performance in The HaLo Project volume 3 whether you win the contest or not.

Your video is the only submission at this point. Unless someone else shares something, you will be the winner by default :-)

Again, great job!

Rudy

Really!!! Wow! Anthony has something last minute in the works, can't wait to see that.

Please though check with Harry. If he prefers that I re-shoot (albeit with a different audience) and stick to as it's taught in Jawdroppers I can certainly do that. I have a show coming up n. That sandwich catch is a mess!

Thanks`again, made my day, but I'm sure Anthony's will be top notch.

Hi Gareth, Why don’t you go ahead and try recording another performance at your next gig and we will use the best one. Thanks again for submitting this video. I really enjoyed watching it!

Hey all!  So here's my submission for the contest.  It's a great trick called Heart Run from Quantum Leaps.  It's a 4 phase effect that has a really nice visual ending and a cool kicker.  It's super easy to do.  So here's the full unedited performance:

To be honest, this is an amazing trick, but my performances don't really do it justice.  Some of the reactions I've gotten....for some reason are never on camera.  One take I did, the spectator was heckling me the whole time.  He sat stoney faced through all the reveals.  Everyone around him was freaking out, but the person I asked to film had cropped them all out!  Then later, he pulls me aside and tells me that Heart Run was the best card trick he'd ever seen!  But the whole time in the video he just looks bored.  I was fuuurious.

I'm more including an unedited performance here because I think it's a great trick to include, not really gunning to win the contest.  I thought I might be able to offer my services in a slightly different way to help the forum.

I do some basic filmmaking and video editing.  You mentioned you were using more basic equipment, and I'd be happy to help you edit a trailer or anything else Rudy if you need it.  Since I had all this footage of me doing Heart Run I thought it'd be a shame to waste it, so I made a 'modern/funky' trailer in the style of Penguin Magic or Ellusionist etc to give you an idea of maybe something we could do:

Tell me what you think.  I'd be happy to help out to edit something for the HaLo Project if you'd like.  But no pressure hahah.

Oy, I'm back. I shot a video at the Atlanta Harvest of Magic, but it was crap. We shot in the bar late at night. I did not look at the video until the next morning and it was ugly: ambient noise, awful lighting, and the result was an incomprehensible performance. (Why did I not look at the video until the next morning? Because Asi Wind showed up and started doing and teaching cards tricks, that's why! More on that later.)

Congrats, Gareth!

Thanks Rudy.

I've been talking to Gareth about this. I've told him he if ever comes to Melbourne I'd like to shoot a trailer for his part of the HaLo project done in a similarly funky style.

I'd also be happy to film the instructions or anything else needed.
