John Carey is a prolific creator of magical effects using cards and coins, but most folks are more aware of his card creations and his books and DVDs. What are some of your favorite John Carey effects? Please include sources, if you have them.

One of my many faves is John's Opening Number, from his book, Crafted With Carey. Two spectators each grab a batch of cards from the center of a shuffled deck and count them. They shuffle and cut their packets to their heart's content, then combine the packets for a final shuffle. The magician announces a prediction, the name of a card. The spectators' cards are returned and for the first time they announce their individual numbers, which are added together. Cards are counted from the top of the deck. The card at the totaled number is the card predicted by the magician. One of the spectators may do the final count.

It's a great effect, not too difficult to do, and in my experience really rocks.

I know I read John's book ... I have read all of John's books ... but this sounds exactly the one of the effects in the early pages of either Scarne on Card Tricks or in Hugard's Encyclopedia of Card Tricks.  I will now need to research this!!

Hmm. Interesting. My copy of Crafted With Carey isn't on the shelf, which means it's somewhere around the house. Soon as I track it down I will look to see if John provides any credits or inspiration.

Rioboo Style, Little Vernon and Time Traveller from Me, My Cards and I.
My Cards are your Cards and Stranger in the Crowd from Minimalistia.
Stealth Assembly from The Carey Files.
They are all quick, simple and so powerful. However, my favorite effect of John's has to be Night at the Casino. It's flippin' genius. It's available as a download from Alakazam.

I love John Carey's work!

The card tricks that I have gotten me good mileage include...

Balducci as I Balducci.  (from Reel Magic). This is a great you do as I do using the Balducci cut.  Devious! (also in Handle with Carey as One deck you do as I do)

Rioboo Style from Me My Cards.  Nice blend think of a card and card at number.

Check out "You've got the Power". Finding the 4 aces from Carey On.

Telikentic is an unusual effect from Minimalistica.

I do John's version Dr Daley all the time from Minimalistica called "Daley might have liked this". This one uses an ingenious subtlety.

Bullet Snatcher has a nice surprise ending from Carey On.

Little Vernon and Sent and Received are nice homage to Dai Vernon.

what I like about John's style.. is it is extremely RELATIONAL.  he creates with simple moves and great plots a wonderful magical experience between himself and the spec.  A great model for me.  He likes to make the spec the 'star' and when it's all over you think... wow... that was fun... not wow... does that magician have great skill!

Agree that Little Vernon is great. Don't recall the effect of Rioboo Style, but will have to look it up since both of you mentioned it.

I, too, like Balducci as I Balducci.

Biddle Goes to Dunsbury from The Carey Files is a great small packet handling of The Dunsbury Delusion.

I checked out Biddle goes to Dunbury, Anthony.  I like it!  Reminds me of another similar Carey effect in Minimalistica called "Homage to Fechter".  Invisi Card is another that has a similar feel to it too.

“Gemini Reflections” and “An Impossibile Conclusion” are two of my favorites. They’re from his 24/7 DVD’s.
These are great tricks that are very easy to do and very strong!

For the record, I haven't seen the DVDs. But, assuming he hasn't published different tricks with the same titles, both these can be found in the already mentioned book "Crafted With Carey."

Interesting. I thought this was one of the "bonus" pre-order books that came with "Me My Cards And I".

That’s how I got it….I think.

For those who have his Night At the Casino you can do an in-faro to put the keys in the right position if you want to shuffle the cards first.

How come nobody lists their "favorite Harry Lorayne effects"?  I know - too many too list, right?

Hey, Harry! Hope all's well. I think there are plenty of threads here highlighting your lifelong contributions to our art - not that there can't be plenty more, mind you! I started this thread hoping to get the conversational ball rolling again after what appeared to me a post-holidays/winter blues lag. So far, so good!
