Hi all. My names Gareth. Very excited to have joined the forum. I'm never really sure how to describe myself from a magical point of view. An amateur, hobbyist, enthusiast, not sure. I don't feel comfortable calling myself a magician. I don't think I've earned that. Friends and family and the local community (small rural town) know me primarily for my profession but most know I do magic as a hobby.

I am sure of one thing, among a few others, I love magic.

I'm 40 and for as long as I can remember magic has enthralled me. I live in Tasmania, Australia. My wife and I emigrated from the UK in 2002.

My childhood memories are scattered with watching Paul Daniels and Wayne Dobson on TV. RIP Mr Daniels, 2016 really sucks. I do remember watching the Statue of Liberty disappear, can't remember seeing much of David Copperfield on UK TV  but that stands out in the memory.

Once Paul's appearances diminished on UK TV in early '90s, magic was scarce to the masses in the UK and it took a back seat in my life through Uni and early 20's.

This might be a modern magic cliché but David Blaine's Street Magic re-ignited the fire in I think the late 1990's. I bought my first book, at that time, Sach's sleight of hand and was hooked. Have had a pack of cards within reach ever since.

I am a member of the café, screen name Geeraff12. Recognise a few names particularly magicfish and Vlad, Barry and Harry. All always so impressive in both style and substance.

Rudy asked me who my favourite magician was as art of registration. Such a hard question so I bombed and gave him 5 names; Harry, Tamariz (I learned mnemonica couple years ago, haven't used it as much as I could have but would be confident I could polish it back up in a couple of quiet hours, incredible how it sticks once you have gone through the time to learn it.), Malone, Skinner and Nash. obviously I should have included Paul Daniels. (I'm calling Vernon/Marlo and Erdnase gimme's)

I'm rambling now, I'm prone to it. Kinda excited. Above all though, I want to learn greater respect to the art. My approach to magic has been pretty scatter-gun. My development needs some direction and focus. This is one of the main reasons I've joined. I feel confident enough to involve myself with truly talented and dedicated masters. The highlight of my magic life has been an email conversation with Harry this week! Basically I need direction..

Harry thanks for letting me know of the forum. I hope I don't let you down.

Gareth

PS on a recent trip to London, I bought Simon Aronsons Art Decko. Whilst  I don't use his stack I love the content.

I hope that you'll join one of our online video sessions. They happen at the spur of the moment, but always fun.

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me.

I look forward to getting to know you better.

Take care,

Welcome Gareth!

So glad you are here!  I'm around the same age but only got into magic the last three years.  I loved it as a kid, remember having a magician come to my fourth grade birthday party, doing a couple 'shows' for my parents, and then I stopped.

Now it's a great hobby for me and I love the theory and philosophy behind the magic.

I just learned the Tamariz stack this year, so have yet to have it be ready for performance yet, but slowly testing out some options.  The book was overwhelming at first, but now I'm just taking my time and picking what I find interesting.  My key goal by end of year is getting a consistent Faro.

Have a great rest of the week!

Thank you Rudy. Re the online sessions, Google tells me 2pm PCT is 6am (next day) AEST. Perhaps an hour earlier would work better especially during the week as he school/kids routine starts about 6:30. Of course a Fri or Sat would be fine but I realise they aren't always great days for others.

Greenknight33 Thank you. Yeah consistent Faro's have eluded me so far. Did you see the video of David Blane at Cambridge Union getting to Mnemonica. Few years ago that process would have flown completely above my head but at soon as I saw the final cut and the 9D and 4C I knew. Mem stack work an excellent choice I think for a bunch of geniuses.

Thanks Logan. Looking forward to it.
