There is already a long thread on the 10-Card poker deal. I have a more fundamental question: how you get in and out of the poker deal? Do you use it as an opener (or closer). What tricks would you perform before or after the poker deal trick? Do you use it thematically? (“People tell me they don’t want to play cards with me. Maybe this is why...”). Use it as part of a greater gambling skills demonstration?

Or do you just put it out there.. no explanations ...

The standard is, "I met an old gambler years ago.."

... but what do you follow up with (trick wise, not latter wise). Or what tricks immediately preceded the poker deal trick?
Maybe it’s just me, but I always think in terms of structure... not just tricks but also presentational sets

Thinking in terms of structure is definitely  a good idea. What do you do now? What would you like to proceed it with? Start with an ace production, do Dr, Daleys Last Trick, then a gambling routine.

Something like that.

When I do Dr. Daleys Last Trick i present a sort of gambling theme.

I should point out, the easy poker deal thread didn't start out as a ten card poker deal thread.... :0

When I used to close a close up set with Power of Poker, I used to introduce it along the lines "A lot of people when they see me do card magic ask if I could cheat at playing cards but the real question is WOULD I cheat at cards. Being honest, I wouldn't and personally I don't gamble because I KNOW what can be done. But here's a fun little example of what can be done if I decided to turn my attention to the dark side..."

Yeah .. good points.

In the past, I'd start sets with a 4 Ace revelation which allows me to keep the royal flush cards at the top of the deck. Then, keeping the 4 aces on the table, I'd false shuffle once, do a wide ribbon spread face down and insert the aces randomly into the spread. AS would go among the top 4 cards obviously and the others equally spaced out through the deck. Square the deck and execute a false cut. Then move into the Paul Gordon routine. I'd close the short card set with either a card mentalism type effect or my "Drawn Conclusion" effect (see The Linking Ring, September 2016, or my book Back To the Launching Pad)

I've found more and more it's important that I first qualify whether or not the person knows anything about Poker or gambling.
You won't get a very good reaction if the individual doesn't know that a Royal Flush is a once in a lifetime occurrence.
I learned this the hard way with a close-up show for a group of teenagers. I now ask, "Have you ever played a game of Poker?"
If they say, "no" I don't do that type of effect but move on to something else.

I have nothing set in stone, but i have done three things in the past and they are;

poker tells- Liar's Poker/ Ortiz
switching cards in play- The Brush/Ortiz from the the same book Scams & Fantasies With Cards
False shuffles demo-Vegas Shuffle/Ortiz/from his book At The Card Table

Welcome to TMF!

I forgot to mention that a fast and impressive opener like Halo Aces ( which is what I am working on ) or cutting to four of a kind you could talk about shuffletracking in blackjack and keeping track of the high and low cards in the deck.

I think Andrew Wimhurst's VHS tape has some decent patter for any ace cutting routine using the patter with the concept of shuffletracking in a routine.

I sent you a PM on this.

Best,
