Welcome to the Magician's Forum, Tom!

You noted that you have a lot of interests outside of magic. That can help a person become a more well rounded performer. You also mentioned that you love self-working tricks. I don't think any trick is really self-working; it still has to be performed cleanly and smoothly, and I believe, entertainingly.  There are quite a few tricks (especially in the realm of cards) that do not require any (or hardly any) sleight of hand, and yet are very strong!  Jean Eugene Robert-Houdin is reputed to have said: "A magician is an actor playing the part of a magician."  That always struck a chord with me. So whether it's with sleight of hand, or self-working tricks, as long as we are creating the illusion of magic for people and entertaining them (and ourselves), I think that's what counts.
