Hello Fellow Magicians!
I did lots of children's shows when I was in my teens and early 20's.  I have long since sold all of my props but I can still back palm and do simple card manipulation.

I am 63 years old I have just learned Skype and my estranged son-in-law is permitting me to Skype my two granddaughters (Aurora-9 and Annabelle-4) for about 45 minutes per month.

We talk a little at first and then I do "Grandpa Patrick's Magic Puppet Show" which has an emphasis on STEM subjects.  The girls get to choose what the next month's topic will be so that they are the *STARS* of the show!

I would like to do some magic to teach them about each month's subject.  A real challenge for me.  I have the time and ability to hand make props.  But as we all know there are hundreds of magic ideas, and by any means I do not know most of them but I think WE know almost all of them.  I would like for the magic to truly be deceptive for a 9 year old.

This month they chose DINOSAURS AND HOW THEY TURNED INTO BIRDS.  Now I did a little online research and found Dean Alan's Magic Dinosaur Show video, but I would like to do something more deceptive than simply turning something flat- front to back.  And I don't like stealing other people's ideas directly without putting myself into the creative process.

So if you would like to help me I would greatly appreciate it.
Thank you so very much,

Grandpa Patrick

Welcome to The Magician's Forum. Glad to have you here! Out of curiosity, how'd you hear about us?

A new book titled Grandpa Magic was featured in a recent issue of Genii and just might have some cool ideas for your consideration. (For some reason I cannot get the link to properly post... Just search for the title on Amazon.)

Hi AV,
I just searched "magic forum" to find you.  Thanks for the idea!  I think that book is for a grandpa who has never done magic before.  I just had my first Skype meeting with my granddaughters on Sunday.  I am doing things more professional.  For instance I created a "Television Studio" with a fly loft made out of pvc pipe.  I have a high quality camera on a tripod and two computers, one for Skyping and the other for the script, music and sound effects.  I even connected the Skype computer to my wide screen TV so that I can see my granddaughters on TV.

One problem I have solved is when you Skype the person you are taking to is looking at you (naturally) on the screen which is below the camera so that it never looks like the person is looking at you.  I find this irritating.  So sitting on my recliner, the camera on the tripod is appears to me to be at the center of the TV.  So when I look at my granddaughters on TV they see me looking at them....which I am!  Problem solved.

Here is an outline of my first show... (pardon the ALL CAPS- I copied and pasted it.

YOU SEE ME?  I SEE YOU?  YOU HEAR ME?  I HEAR YOU?

Thanks for the response to my question about how you found us. It's good to know how we're being tracked out there!

I saw the book from a different perspective. Yes, it's as you say, a book of magic tricks and stunts for novices. It is also a book for grandparents interested in performing for their grandchildren, the tricks being selected and included for that specific purpose. It just might have some of those ideas you seek. Or not.

As to your dino show theme. What about a torn and restored paper where you begin with a bird and end up with an Archaeopteryx? (Or vice-versa, but the Archaeopteryx appearance makes for better theatre!) Or a change bag representing the evolutionary process? Or a variation of the old gag where a plastic dinosaur is dropped into a paper bag, then the bag filled with air and popped (whacked), at which point the air is filled with feathers?

Hi AV
That is just the kind of ideas I am looking for!  My goal is to use magic and puppetry to teach my children STEM subjects without them realizing that they are learning anything.
My first show was a lot of fun because I combined a song "The Dingle Dangle Scarecrow" with a stick puppet I made from scratch so that the arms an legs could be moved separately (by strings hanging down the back of the stick)

So creatively I'm thinking about starting with a song (based on what my granddaughters want to talk about) and then adding the puppetry and magic for fun.
Although being the creative type I might start with a science experiment or magic trick and try to find an appropriate song.  Anyway I think my granddaughters and I are going to have a lot of fun together.  Rudy suggested a cup and balls routine to show the changes from a dinosaur to a bird.  He also had a great little thimble inspired trick.  Rudy told me about the session room and so I will go there this afternoon for the first time.

Speaking of a torn and restored paper, I heard recently that this was probably the first recorded magic trick done.  But you probably already knew that.  It still a wonderful illusion!

Thanks for the warm welcome and the great ideas.  I will be taking videos of my shows so maybe I will post them where you can see them.

Thanks again!
Grandpa Patrick

Like, AV, my thoughts also went to a change bag (or a mirror box if you're into making props -- I could see this getting a lot of use throughout your lessons). Even just as an intro to refresh their memory about the topic they selected previously.

The store, Michaels, sells small plastic animal/dinosaur figurines which can be purchased separately. If you find them small enough, you could do a bobo switch from dino to bird. I get a ridiculous amount of mileage from the bobo switch with my three chillens, age 2.5, 4, and 6.

I feel like there could be something with a magic coloring book type effect, but I can't quite flesh that one out. Just a brainstorm.

Here's one! What about a zombie effect, in which you cover the dinosaur, it takes flight, and then end to reveal the bird in the dinosaur's place.

And for a future topic, why not teach a little straight-up magic? My grandfather taught me magic when I was 6 years old. A squirting nickel, a jumping quarter, and nickels to dimes changed the course of my life. If you're looking for pedagogical value, learning magic and honing public speaking is what helped me to acquire a career as a college instructor and the communications skills helped me in every job I held previously. OK, I'm waaaaaay off topic now! Hope you all have a lot of fun, and enjoy those grandchildren!
