This is the new offering from Mr Carey and contains over 70 close-up card effects, with a couple of coin tricks thrown in for good measure.

It's a well presented hardback volume with clear and concise instructions for each effect, covering at most a couple of pages per trick. This brevity reflects John's approach to card magic, stripping down some classic effects to create direct and powerful magic.  Whilst there are no complex sleights required, the book does assume a certain level of familiarity with card magic and in that vein does not always go into detail on how to perform the basic moves.  For example, it will suggest controlling a card to second from top and leave it to you to choose how to do that.  Again, I find this to be a refreshing change and enables the book to do what it is designed to without wading through pages of instruction.
There are clear black and white photographs scattered throughout but to be honest, the text is that clear, they aren't needed - though they are a nice addition.

In addition to the tricks themselves, there are a few utility moves taught that I am sure will prove useful in many other scenarios.

I really do hate the over-used cliches when people review magic - "it's a real worker", "packs small, plays big". It makes me want to chew my own arm off!  However, I find myself having to find a way to phrase the former of these.  This book is full of commercial, workable, doable card magic. There are no long-winded routines that send your audience into a stupor. No complex shenanigans that will leave them wondering what it was they were supposed to be amazed with. Just simple direct effects to leave them wanting more.

As you can tell, I love this book.  John is one of the nicest guys around and is making more and more of an impact with his innovative thinking and straight-forward presentation.  I believe this is a great addition to any magical bookshelf.

Take a look at the website for the book and judge for yourself.  John performs some of the effects on there, so you will get a good idea of what you are getting.

Aw, man, I hate hearing this. Of course what I mean is, damn, now I have to set aside money for yet another card book. I love John Carey's thoughts on cards and have found several items in both Crafted With Carey and Minimalistica that I love to perform. It should be against the law that any single person has such prolific creative output!

I agree with you, Sibex, about the briefer explanations. John, Paul Gordon, and others have developed a real knack for distilling descriptions down to their core. Sure, this means that the reader's must be assumed to have at least some experience with cards/magic, but it makes for quicker, easier reading. The trade-off is that there's sometimes a requirement to work through things with cards in hand, but for me that's a plus more than a minus.

Seriously though, thanks for the heads up on the new book.

And John's customer service is great. I pre-ordered this book and received some e-books as bonus. The book was supposed to be delivered at the beginning of November but there were some problems with the printing company and John told us right away. He was so sorry about the delay (1.5 months) and he kept us informed about what was happening that he even sent some more bonus files. I am still waiting for the book (it is a problem with our mailing system in my country... so slow!) and can hardly wait to get it. I have bought most of his books (I just couldn't buy The Carey Files 1 in 2016 but it was one of the bonus files when I pre-ordered this new book) and I use some of his effects. If I were you and wanted some good magic, I would buy this book as well.

Yes, it is available only from him at the moment. His other books have become available on online shops some time after they were printed and sold by John. The same could happen with this book but if you wait for this to happen you risk the book could go out of print and never get it...

Hi John, thank you so much for stopping by. I am a fan of your work and regularly perform an effect from your 24Seven DVD set called, “Gemini Reflections”. I can remember watching the demonstration of that effect and after you revealed that the first two cards matched, I said to myself, “it would be awesome if he could turn over the top cards of the pack to show that those matched too”. When you proceeded to turn over those last packets to reveal that they matched, I laughed out loud and immediately learned that effect and added it to my repertoire. It’s incredibly easy and very entertaining.

Although I don’t perform them quite as often ( for no other reason then just forgetting that I have them in my arsenal), I also learned “When Nyquist met Lorayne and “An Impossible Conclusion”. Two, very powerful effects!

I will be purchasing your book soon. Thanks for stopping by!

Rudy

Since my name is in the title (When Nyquist met Lorayne) I'd love to know the effect/method. Can you send it to harrylorayne@earthlink.net? No big issue, but thought I'd ask.

I am currently reading the book. It is beautifully produced, and has wonderful magic. Mr. Carey is very responsive to all emails and his service is of the highest quality. Once I finish the first read through, it will be time to spend time with Me, My Cards & I.

Thanks Gents! Harry, I simply used your moving pencil force from Close Up Card Magic to force two cards in a spread that had a card hidden underneath with the Nyquist ribbon spread hideout. The deck was closed and then spread again to reveal a card trapped between the two they stopped at to finish with a sandwich.

Best Wishes

John

Hi guys

I performed "Little Vernon" today, John's minimalist take on Vernon's "Out of Sight, Out of Mind", published in Me, My Cards and I.   It's really strong.  As always John combines clever techniques and straight-to-the-point presentation to create great magic.

It's currently available as a download from Penguin, but if you get the book you get almost 80 effects.

Yes, and...

The past several days I have been browsing through The Carey Files, which came in a bundle deal as an ebook when I purchased my hardcover copy of Me, My Cards, and I. I gotta tell you, there's a great deal of gold buried in them thar pages. Everyone will gravitate toward their faves, but to this point I have been practicing Biddle Goes to Dunbury, Three in One, and When Two Minds Meet. And I am less than halfway through!

Glad Robin resurrected this thread.

And I'm doing it again!   I performed a short set of card magic today at my soon-to-be-mother-in-law's birthday party.  I opened with "Ritualistica"  from "Me, My Cards & I" and the reaction was huge.

Thanks John!
