Last night, my wife and I stepped into Powell’s Books here in Portland.

Look what I found on their shelf for just $10 bucks!

You ever find a bit of treasure at a bookstore?

Definitely an excellent book. I bought mine from Daryl in 1980 at the Desert Magic Seminar at the Aladdin in Las Vegas.

It's inscribed "To 'heavywork Mike.' Thank you for the eight big ones."

Miss that guy!

I do look in used book stores every so often but never found any 'modern' books. Did once pick up a copy of "The Secret Out" from the 1800's cheap.

Wow -- great find Rudy!

It must be about 25 years ago that I found Vol's 1, 2, 3 of NY Magic Symposium hardcovers at a used book store in Jamaica, NY.  I had some time to kill between trains.  I think I bought them for something like $15 for the three...or maybe $30.  Still, a bargain.

Some great finds. Over fifty years go I bought The Dai Vernon Book of Magic, Modern Coin Magic, Magic as a Hobby and Classic Secrets of Magic in a used-book store near the Ohio State Campus. That was a great day!

A friend of mine who went to MAGIC Live in 2016, bought the 2-book set of Daryl books for me. I paid full price for the set ($60). I think Daryl was there but my friend never got to see him to have the books autographed and nobody knew then what would happen just about 6 months later...

Anyway, now my "story"... a little more than 31 years ago (I think it was the end of 1986) I was in California and while driving along "El Camino Real" I was in a city (I forgot which one it was). Suddenly, I saw a used books store at a corner. I had nothing to do so I parked the car and went in. I browsed around and found nothing interesting. I asked the person in charge if he had any magic trick books. He said, "look overthere" and pointed at a corner. I checked and saw nothing but a door. He said again, just open the door and check the shelves right in front of you. I went inside and found about 2 shelves full of magic books! I already had many of them and so I just picked the ones I didn't have... about 15 books. I took them to the guy in charge and I paid about $150 for the lot. I asked him if they were his books and he said "no." He said those books had been lying around for a while and since they were not the kind of books that sell quickly, they had been placed in the little warehouse at the back. Somehow I sensed that his "no" really meant "yes" but I did not want to go any further. Probably he had just quit magic...

Well, one of those books was "Card Modes" by Robin Robertson. It is one of my favorite books. That is where I found Karl Fulves' Riffle Shuffle Control (RSC) for the first time. Robin says if you want to see how the RSC came about, you should try to find KF's RSC manuscript to read its history. Of course, just like with all of Karl Fulves books, it is very difficult, if not impossible to find. So I have had to settle with the description and tricks I found in Card Modes and the few effects I have found in other books.

I paid $12.95 + tax for Card Modes and I thought it was expensive back then for a used book but with time I think it was a real bargain to find this book at that price. I still take out the book and read it from time to time to re-read it again. It has some other things in it that I still do today...

Me too I have one from Daryl also signed.  A few years ago he wanted to buy it back from me.  I was willing but I didn't really want to let it go, and I think he figured that out because he said if I was attached to it then I should keep it because there are no more and he was just going to sell it elsewhere.  So I still have it.    Saw the book listed for quite a bit of money not too long ago.

Mine is soft cover. And I believe it is an earlier printing.

I love that cover illustration on "Card Modes" - Mr. Robertson appears to be using one of those super fancy computers that doesn't need a screen.

I never even heard of this book before now - I wonder how many copies of old treasures are sitting untouched in people's "magic rooms" across the world.

I also love the cover but I love the contents even more!

And I guess thousands or even millions of books are just sitting in people's magic rooms or personal warehouses, collecting dust. And many people may not even know they have those treasures...

Awesome! A few years ago I found a copy of "The Memory Book" for a dime at a thrift store! I think I got my money's worth!

Hmm, seems a few posts on this thread were deleted.  Would be interesting to know why.

Hi Bmat,

I believe that there is only one comment that was deleted regarding the stupidity of people who sell used books. Since a number of our members sell their items here at prices that are lower than what they originally sold for, and because the whole point of this topic is to boast about the deals that you found at used bookstores, I didn’t feel that it was appropriate to leave the comment here.

Other than that, I don’t believe any other comments were deleted. Please let me know if you think otherwise. Have a great day!

Rudy
