Hi All,

Do any of you have any thoughts/ideas on how we can get the word out about the Magician's Forum?

Harry was kind enough to send out an invitation to his whole email list and I immediately felt the impact of that.

I'm open to suggestions and would love some feedback.

Thanks!

Rudy

What do you think the cost would be to take out a small add in The Linking Ring or another publication? I know it's not free, but it would reach a lot of people fast.

Good question! I'll try to set aside time to contact them this week.
Thanks Robert.

email aw@alan-watson.com

He puts out Magic New Zealand via email. You could reach a broad international base that way. get on his list, see what the newsletter looks like then write a submission for it.

Great suggestion! I'll do that!

Vanish Magazine offers full page ads for $50. Perhaps you could add a PayPal link here to take donations for the site (unless you are already planning on selling ad space, or something). Vanish reaches a fairly huge audience of magicians.

Thanks for the suggestion, Evan. $50 seems reasonable. I'll do that.

I'm not looking to make money from this forum and don't want the space to be cluttered with ads. So ill continue to seek creative ways to avoid that.

Thanks again!

Everyone with a FaceBook account and subscribes to various "talk magic" pages should post the URL for this forum, where permissable.

Thanks Tommy. Man, I love your idea for those who have a lot of magicians in their Facebook community.

If I put a link to this forum on my Facebook page, very few (if any) of my friends would become part of this community.
I've only got about 5 or 6 magician buddies linked to me on Facebook.

I appreciate the suggestion!

Some Facebook groups like Full Circle Magic might allow some advert. You'd just have to ask the admins first.

I'm also a part of a small group online. I'll spread the word there.

Cheers,
Craig

Someone already posted it on the magic café that's how I found it. Harry's e-mail took me to a dead link don't know why but can't check because I deleted  it. Any one else that got the e-mail could check.

I'm glad that you found us, Diemaker. Harry told me that some people couldn't reach this forum through the link that he sent. I'm not sure why and I wonder how many folks fell through the cracks.

I had been a member of the mcafe for a few months, but I found out about these forums through Reddit.com, on the /r/magic section.

That's great! As you may know, there's a magic secrets subreddit too, and you have to prove an interest to join (like send a photo of your bookshelf), but I found that neither sub is all that active, at least not last I checked.

Yeah I saw that the subreddit existed, but the magic reddit is so slow that I figured the subreddit would likely be dead.

This might strike some as having no value. Usually I don't.

But here goes.

In your personal email closing (signature), put something like "have you seen http://www.themagiciansforum.com yet? It's an excellent forum."

Make the link live. Some email clients or sites let you choose what signature goes to a recipient. Careful not to SPAM and note that some folks are wary to click on things.

But for those you know, it'll spread the word each time you write a mail, and also when it is sent on.

Hope this helps. It does in corporate-land.

Hey Rudy,
I just added you to my website "quick links"

http://nwringoffire.com/

(toward the bottom of the index page...)

Ironically, as soon as I added you, one of the other site links magically disappeared. [smile]

I belong to a site for people who collect and play boardgames.  Some of those folks indicate magic as an additional interest.  I'll make sure they know about this site.

Hi: The reason some of the people I emailed to reached a dead end is - I mistakenly, inadvertently, on some of emails, listed the site as the magiciansforum.com.  It's that space between "the" and "magicians" that caused the problem. It should, of course, be themagiciansforum.com

Also, as of yet, it doesn't come up on the first page of a Google search. You have to go two or three pages in to find it.

That's makes perfect sense. I hope that they were able to figure it out.

Thanks Harry!

As of 6:44 Chicago time a Google search agrument of "The Magicians Forum" shows the site six from the top of the first page.  Make it possessive (properly) and it drops one, to seven.  Still the first page though.

I might be looking at a cached version, but that should not matter.

On Bing, non posessive or possessive it is number ONE on the first page.  Can't beat that.  But few folks use Bing.  (ex MS person here.)... Never did become an adjective, e.g., "Bing that, will ya?"

Five down on Yahoo.  But... well... it's Yahoo.

Finally, no one knows the secret sauce of Google or Bing.  It's with the Coke formula.  So these are mutable results.

Thank you all for your help with the promotion of the site and the info.

So far there have been things no other forum can claim to have had/done in such a short period of time (less than 4 months):

* Rudy Tinoco's unselfish willingness to help everybody on this forum. That is one of the reasons why he created the Magician's Forum. Thank you Rudy!
* Harry Lorayne's presence and help. Need we say more?
* Some other well-known magicians who have their own section in the Session Room where they share their knowledge.
* 2 (free) video lectures by world-famous magicians and more to come!
* Impromptu video sessions with some of the members of the forum, some of them have also been a kind of mini lectures, with some well-known magicians. These promise to be happening on a regular basis, specially in the Session Room. It pays to be part of that secret room.
* The participation of all of us in the different sections. This participation has also proven to be a great asset on the forum. Everybody helping everybody or asking for help with no egos getting in the way. This is also something not many forums can claim to have. At least not many of the free forums I belong to. There are people from all over the world on this forum and we keep getting more and more people every day, including more well-known magicians.
* I am sure there are other things that I forgot to mention or that will happen soon. So stay tuned for more MAGIC on the Magician's Forum!

Thany you all for being part of this great project.

This is my opinion, which means it carries no weight whatsoever.
But it does make me feel better when I post it!

There's no need to promote the site. We don't want to be the "latest thing".

We want something that people delight in discovering on their own and
find so wonderful that they treat it like a treasured magic secret-- only tipping
it to the people they know would value it as much as they do.

I see no use in trying to force growth. Rudy built it-- they will come.

Those who seek us out will value us much more than those we roped in.

The only "promotion" we need is to mention it to people you know will value it as much as you do!

And, as promised, I feel better now.

Thanks for this post, Luis! It's very encouraging to hear that you feel like this forum is all that I hoped it would be. I feel like it's going to get even better as time goes on.

Its folks like you who make this forum the positive community that it is [smile]

Your opinion most definitely carries weight.

I've actually settled on letting this forum grow on it's own. Healthy communities grow and thrive. As we continue to foster the friendly, helpful environment that we've got going...people will find their way here.

Thank you all for your support! This forum is only as good as its members!

I have noticed that this is mainly a card trick forum. That might deter people who are interested in other facets of magic. The world does not evolve around card tricks, you know!

Furthermore I think this place needs more professional magicians. They have an insight which is lacking here. Not that pros are the be all and end all but they have a lot of useful viewpoints that escape the notice of amateurs.

Get the kid show people over here! They will liven up the place!

Mark,

Your comments are appreciated. That said, while it is not the intention to make this a community for cardicians only, the fact remains that card magic dominates all other branches of the art quite easily.

Building a community takes time as you know and this forum is only a half year old. I am certain that there are pros lurking here and some will choose to join while others will stay put in larger online communities. That said, Rudy has done a stellar job - and I am certain you would agree - such that we have not had any flame wars or trolls. The recent lecture by Steven Youell demonstrates that The Magician's Forum seeks to provide the community with more in-depth discussions as well as invaluable lectures. Additionally, neither the Cafe nor the Genii fora contain subsections devoted to individual magicians as does this forum. I love the idea and I would encourage you as a professional to use your "forum" to assist amateurs by providing pro insights.

Best,
Vlad

Hey Rudy,

I have to agree with Steven.  I have let a few people know about  the forum, but only because I thought they could add something.  Having a big influx of people could make the mods work overtime.

I've told a couple of my friends about the Forum.  so far the only one to have joined was Barron Stringfellow.  That said, I do hope we can convince more of the "big shots", so to speak, of the magic world to join in.  There's several magicians I'd love to have conversations with!

Thanks Tom. I agree too.

We're not as big as the other forums, but I believe that we have a real sense of community here. We also have some giants among us that have been willing to generously share their knowledge and experience with the rest of us. That Harry posts here regularly still astounds me. Lucky us!!

I'm grateful to all of our members who help make this place the great community that it is becoming!

I agree with Steven Youell, we should not force the growth of the forum, by placing ads on various sites. I think the best way to promote will be the "spread the word" way . And who wants to enter the forum should be in the spirit of those who have only one book in the library and that for him is his greatest treasure.
Other forums ended up trivializing because they wanted to grow too fast, we should value the quality rather than quantity.

Just a note. And I hope it does note sound selfish. I have loads of threads in this forum that I have yet to even peruse. So for a person like me, slow and steady growth is actually nice as when I hit a quality post (and there are so many) I need a lot of time to digest...

This forum may not be very large (yet) but it is a definitely a wonderful place to be.
