This looks interesting to me. I'd be curious how you justify putting the counted cards back into the deck. I feel that some people might wonder why you're doing that. I'm sure that the method must require it.

I was given R.A.C.A.R.A.N as a gift by magoitaliano (I gave him volume 1 of the HaLo Project in return). I find the method to be very smart. I would have never guessed the method.

This can truly be done with a borrowed, shuffled pack (even an incomplete one), and with any number.

As much as I find the method to be very creative, I'm still not absolutely sure how I feel about putting the counted off cards back into the deck. If the spectator gives you a number above 30 and you begin counting cards into their hand, I think it would totally make sense to remove those cards from their hands and put them back in the deck. "Sorry, that's getting a bit messy. Let's fix that." Then start dealing again to show their freely selected card at the thought of number. But...if they choose a number like 10 or 12, I think that it would seem unnecessary and thus a bit suspicious.

Some of you know that I can be a bit of a stickler about trying make sure that there is always some believable/reasonable motivation for the sleights that are necessary to perform an effect.

That's what caused me to re-think Vallarino's, Express Sandwich effect. Vallarino had this unmotivated (but necessary) part of the effect where he has a card signed, placed back into the deck, then it's tossed back to the table only to be lost back in the deck. Sure, maybe that will just fly. I personally don't like that kind of approach and came up with something that works for me. (Compare the videos below). My version has it's own issues that I had to work out (with some advice from John Guastaferro). For example, why does one king have to be replaced face up and the other face down? Saying that "the red kings aren't as powerful as the black kings, so they need to see it's face" isn't great, but at least it gives some kind of reason for doing so.

Anyway, the point in sharing all of this, is because I believe that magoitaliano has come up with something that is very smart. Some of you may be able to justify the placing of the counted off packet back into the deck. If so, I believe that you'll really have a strong piece of magic on your hands.

I personally don't believe that I would feel comfortable with it. With that said, I'm willing to give this a try and perform it for some of my trusted friends to see what they think. If it truly goes undetected (and they will surely tell me if it doesn't) I will record a performance of it so that you can see what this looks like in the real world.

I appreciate magoitaliano sharing the method with me.

Rudy

Very nice review and commentary, Rudy

Regarding justification for putting cards back into deck—- that is indeed an awkward situation. I ran into the same situation with one of my ACAAN effects (“ACCAN Opener” from “Back to the Launching Pad”).

What I learned is that it is all in the structure of the effect. I justified it as a “reset” needed to properly time the location of a card. It is perfectly hidden and justifiable

Again, Magiitaliano, take your method and drop it into an interesting structure and you’ll be set. The structure need not even speak to the ACAAN plot. The audience will certainly understand what you are trying to accomplish.

Happy to discuss further if you like.

All sounds great, Stefano! I was merely commenting on the motivational premise of ACAAN. To us magicians, ACAAN is a marvelous plot and executed well, it is something we drool over! But I have found unless it is wrapped up presenationally into a compelling premise ... with a good “hook” ... most laypeople found the plot boring if not dreary. Even David Bengals when he first presented what has now become known as the “Berglas Effect” on British TV in the 1960’s, had the ACAAN buried in the middle of another routine.

Looking forward to your new version!!
