If you're an older Cardguy like me, then you probably remember the ORIGINAL Apollo Mats. They were the Holy Grail of Close Up Mats. Unfortunately, they went out of business after only a few years.

But now there's something even better: Pattrick's Mats. If you ask any top Cardman in the world about them you'll soon find that I am not using hyperbole when I say they are the best mats in the world for Card work and Close Up. They're available in many shapes and sizes and not only that, he is able to make custom sizes. Unless Pattrick goes out of business, these are the only mats I'll ever own. I have what Pattrick calls the Original Material as it's close to the same material as the Old Apollos. The Original Material surface is also washable which makes it perfect for Restaurant workers. Embroidery work is also available so you can have your name or website on it for advertising purposes.

Although the cost is slightly higher than the crap you'll find elsewhere, the small investment is well worth it in terms of quality, feel and durability. Take if from me-- you're wasting your money with anything other than Pattrick's Mats.

P.S. Pattrick is going to be at Fechter's, so if it takes him a day or so to respond do not despair. He makes each of these by hand so he can't fulfill orders while he's away.

Steve I agree Patrick's Mats are fantastic and I have been using them for a few years. He will also personalise them in any way for you.

Thanks Steven, I had not heard of this forum, and now just joined. Looks pretty interesting. I'll be off to FFFF convention in the morning. I'll be back here soon. Thank You. Pattrick

I have 6 Pattrick's mats. Two are custom. All are absolutely great.
If you use an inStand as a table, he now even makes mats that will fit the tops.
If he doesn't have a size you need, reach out to him and he can pretty much make anything you need (within reason).

Yep - great stuff.

One of his new items is a folding mat. The rubber base is cut at the halfway mark but the top is not cut. So it folds in half. When folded it will fit in an inside jacket pocket. Great for walkaround.

He also makes some bar mats that roll out to about 3 feet in length while 8 to 12 inches wide.

And, as mentioned, he'll custom make a mat. So you can make a table to whatever size you like and then order a mat for a perfect fit.

I have several and have had Pattrick monogram a company website on it for trade shows.

I have several in various sizes and love them. After I bought my first one I knew I'd found exactly what I needed. Three of mine are personalized and I couldn't be happier with the quality of his work.

Although I have never seen or used one of these mats, I have heard and seen literally dozens of positive reviews. Never a negative. that is pretty amazing..

Hear, hear. Pattrick recently did custom mats for our show, which are perfect for table-hopping.

I opted to buy the largest black one they stock instead of a Poker Table (wife won this battle) and I've been nothing but happy with it. Fantastic mat.

I recently bought and received a Born's Book Mat. It is a thing of beauty. It fits right in my vest pocket and unfolds into a nice workable surface.
I liked it so much, I'm having one made with custom embroidery.

That sounds great, I am going to look into it.

A long time ago I realized that although I really like performing on a mat (especially for spreads and turnovers, the Chop cup - and certainly Matrix) I began to feel like carrying it around was a handicap, especially if I encountered a group that was standing. Putting it on the floor is not a good option.  Carrying it around felt cumbersome and often trying to clear space at someone's table (their personal space), or where there was liquid or food on the table, seemed undesirable.

So I have used one in recent times only rarely. But this Book Mat may be the way to go.

I made my own little mat for like 5$, it works perfectly and if I need to replace it I can cut some more material, I never really cared for the quality of my mat other than having a clean and soft surface where to place my props, however I understand the appeal of a finely crafted mat. it's just not my thing.

Scroll down to the bottom and click on the second page.
Scroll down to the bottom and you'll see the Born's Book Mat.
To the right of it is Pocket Book Mat.
The difference is size. The Born mat is wider. I measured my inside vest pocket and the wider mat fit so I got it.

I have to admit I was a little leary about getting this. Others have tried to do a fold in half mat and I never read good things about them.
I like Pattrick's work and took a chance, especially since it wasn't that expensive.
I was pleasantly surprised. It folds in half. When you unfold it, it's dead on. There is no overlap or kinking. The thing works.

The alligator material is a tough synthetic which means if you put it down on a messy table, you'll be able to clean it off. It's also convenient. If I take a mat I need to perform on it or decide where I'm going to put it. I don't want to leave it on a table nor do I want to roll it up and stick it in a pocket. This pad sits in your pocket like one of those large men's wallets or checkbooks. Take it out, unfold it and not only do you have your performing surface, there's also a little James Bond type mystique about it.

I checked it out. It's a very good idea.  Like the James Bond mystique aspect, as well.

The buck twins had some really fancy mats for sale on their website although I think they were a little overpriced

Thanks EVILDAN. I wasn't aware of the name. I have one of these and it's definitely great. I thought it was from John Born.

Pattrick wins again. Very cool stuff. I just picked up one of the large folding mats at the Trics convention. Great item.

I read about his mats before too, and I picked a table hopper one, but he said he cut it in the wrong axis, so it may be a unique one [biggrin] It's 7x13 when opened and 3.5x13 when closed. Also, I need to measure a couple of round tables I have because he can cut them in any shape, so I'm thinking on fitting round mats on them.

He does great custom work. I had him make some mats for my two insTand tops before he started offering them. They fit prefect. I've had then for a few years now and they still look new.
