I happened to be wandering through a dollar store the other day and stumbled upon a movie in the bin. It was called, "The Great Buck Howard." It starred John Malkovich and Colin Hanks (Tom's son). I must confess I've never heard of this movie.  It is about a past his prime mentalist, and it looked decent. I watched it last night with the Mrs. and I must say it was very enjoyable. It had respect for the art of magic, and it was pretty well acted. The "act" in the show seemed slightly familiar, and it turns out to be based on The Amazing Kresin's stage show. If that's not reason enough to watch it, it sports a cameo by the one and only Ricky Jay. If you find it, watch it.

Just thought I'd share.

Cheers,
Craig

I'll have to head over to the Dollar Tree and see if they've got it. Sounds cool!

Great movie.

If I remember correctly, the thing I took away from the movie was Kreskin acknowledging who "his people" were.
He wasn't meant for Vegas...

This movie actually looks pretty good, I'm not usually a big fan of most movies about magic or mentalism like 'The Prestige' or 'The Illusionist'.  I mean those were great movies in their own right, but man it's nice to see some magic portrayed with a bit of levity.

Yeah, BUck performs once in Vegas and that's it, but in the special features they were clear to distinguish that the performing persona was the only thing Kresin inspired (not the prima donna off stage drama). There was a neat interview with Kresin in the bonus features as well. Apparently, the stories' writer followed Kresin to a bunch of shows.

I have been wanting to see this movie for several years. I will look it up on amazon prime or netflix. I am sure I could get a pretty cheap dvd copy on amazon. Thanks for bringing this to our attention mediocre_magic.

Incidentally, Netflix has a few movies on magic. Max Maven gave a good review of an Asian (I think it is Chinese) movie called simply The Magician. He felt it was well acted and the magician in it was believable. I agree that in a lot of movies, the actor playing the magician is not always convincing.

On netflix, I really liked Woody Allen's Magic in the Moonlight. I think he has a other one on there as well.
