Years ago I had a co-worker who became a good friend. Being a hard-core stamp collector, he  belonged to a stamp collectors club that met once a month and attended annual stamp collector conventions. My friend was so enamored with his hobby that he felt it necessary to share his love for stamps whenever the opportunity presented itself. His belief was that his enthusiasm would spark the same interest in stamps to whoever he shared his hobby with.

It soon became tough for me to accept an invite to his home because of the inevitable moment where he would excuse himself to his man-cave and return with one of his stamp albums. I was just too polite to explain to him that stamp collecting BORED me to tears.

One day at work my friend pulled me aside and said he wanted to share a concern with me. He explained that my obsession with magic was fascinating, but probably more so to other magicians than the average person on the street. He asked that when we go out on Fridays after work to please leave the tricks at home. As a friend, he felt I should know that the majority of the people I was performing for were being polite. In reality, however, if they wanted to see magic they would buy tickets to see a magic show rather than have it "forced" upon them in a casual social setting.

The following Friday a bunch of us were gathered at a local tavern enjoying the Happy Hour atmosphere. We hadn't finished our first pint when my friend reached into his backpack and pulled out a stamp album. He was excited to show us his recent acquisition of some rare foreign stamps...I clapped my hands with exaggerated excitement and guzzled what remained in my glass. Thank goodness for friends!

Perfect example of the "Why do you see the speck in your brother's eye but fail to notice the beam in your own eye?" cognitive bias. [crazy]

Haha!  Very funny, Waterman!

I personally would have said something at that point, and excused myself from another boring demonstration ...

Very funny indeed!

Isn´t there a card trick that involves stamps?! Something similar to Derek Dingle´s Post-it-routine? I believe it´s in AoA somewhere, have to check, with that you both could have fun on one night, your friend takes his stamps with him and subsequently you take his stamps (the seldom ones preferred...) and show one of your wonders. For harmony and peace!

If there's a prize for "Post of the Year," you just won it.

Great story! I so wish you had whipped out a deck of cards when he brought out the stamp book. That would be the true Act III of the story :)
Thanks for sharing,

Or next time, stick some stamps onto 4 black-faced cards, and perform Dai Vernon’s Twisting the Aces!

No, I don't want to hold the baby, and I don't want to see pictures of your kids or your cats either.

What? But my kid and cat are freaking beautiful! How about a weblink to my Blog that I post non-stop about both?

I have a stamp album, well it's actually a book. All the stamps are in mint condition and all are First Class.
It says so on the cover.

This is my original thought I've used for years. Anyone is welcome to use it with proper attribution:

Nothing is dumber than somebody else's hobby.
