Has anyone else played around with the new marked deck marketed by Penguin? These things are a blast!

A deck was included in the swag bag at the recent MAXX event in Atlanta, and despite Michael Weber’s use of the deck in several tricks at MAXX, I left mine unopened for a week. When I did open them I felt like a kid on Christmas morning.

Printed on Bicycle Maiden Back stock with an Air Cushion Finish, the cards handle well out of the box, but it’s the crazy markings that make the deck such fun. Believe it or not each card is marked in six different places. The markings are easy to see once you know the what and the where, and they require only the quickest glimpse to read.

I haven’t gotten as crazy as Mr. Weber coming up with uses for the deck, but even simple stupid “impossible” mind reading demonstrations get outrageous reactions. Today I ordered a brick and recommend them to your attention.

Oh, and I realize that there are divergent opinions regarding marked decks, but I’m telling you, these things are fun if you open your magician’s mind!

I've had them for a while now. Penguin had a sale on them a while back. I thought they had too many marks. So I'm back to my old standby.

Yes, they are heavily marked, aren't they? I haven't had anyone catch the marks yet despite "forcing" a couple of folks to take close looks. An example of hiding in plain sight?! What's your old standby?

If I took out my own deck for the kind of people I do card magic for - they'd get hysterical!

The same holds true for me and sponge balls. I NEVER perform magic with my own sponge balls.

Forgive me for being an old buddy-duddy ... but can someone explain what the spinning blue circle face means?

I also recently bought a brick of blue Maiden back marked decks. The red ones were out of stock and it was about a week before they got back in stock at the time I bought them and I couldn't wait because it was a sale (with free shipping to Worldwide). Unfortunately it took more than a month for the parcel to arrive and I just got them last week. I just opened one of the decks and I can hardly wait to have time to watch the videos that Penguin prepared for the purchasers of these decks to show us some effects that can be done with them.

Perhaps now I will buy another brick of red backs as well. They are down to 20 bricks now (they tell you on their site how many bricks they have). If I cannot get them before they are out of stock, then I will wait for the next batch...

Luigimar, thanks for pointing out the existence of the videos. I had no idea they were available and watched part of one during my morning workout. Some interesting ideas there!

Av,

Glad to be of help. I never would have guessed you had no idea about the videos until you mentioned the fact. You have found them I gather from your post.

When you buy from Penguin, they tell you you have a private magic collection where they list things related to your purchases. That is where you can find the related videos or discussions (e.g. for video downloads or DVDs or books).

So if you didn't know this and have bought from Penguin, check your account (in "My Downloads" folder within your account settings) to see if you are missing something.

I mentioned this at another topic, but the effect, "Two Piles" can be performed using this deck.
