...Aldo Colombini died!

This evening I will make, to his honour and rememberance, some Spaghetti Bolognese for my son, some burro con salvia with kibbled pepper for me and my wife, a glass of Chianti and Valpolicella, some italian music and afterwards I will revisit Color Contact, Holmes vs. Moriarty, his lecture notes and then I´ll grab Apocalypse to dig for further gems and gold.

Isn´t that beautiful?!

Have a nice day,

Axel

PS. Do you have favorites from Aldo?

Wow has it really been five years already?

I've always loved Paramount. On his Card Festival DVD, he taught a version of Remember/Forget by Mike Rogers and that has been my go-to opener ever since.

I love Aldo's stuff.  Easy to do and good impact.  Speaking of which, Impact was the name of his first book.  A spiral bound book full of great effects.

Within the last two weeks, I have come into possession of several Aldo DVDs. I should have known there was a reason. Now it's on my calendar.

Five years already?! Wow... time flies... Miss him just like the first day!

One of my fondest memories of magic is of about 25+ years ago. I went to a magic convention and there I met Aldo. He gave a great lecture as always and showed his FISM award winning Cups and Balls effect. I was in awe when I saw it. He also taught us an effect with a deck of cards and a rubberband among other things. I will be revisiting this today...

Anyway... we were on a break and I was with a friend and we met Aldo by chance. I overcame my nervousness and asked him about a false cut he used during the lecture. He spent about 15 minutes with me showing me the details of this false cut.  My friend left and I was with Aldo for those fifteen minutes which I treasure now as I haven't had something similar with another magician. He did not leave until I could do the false cut with no problem. Aldo was a great guy and he would do anything to help you if you asked. I asked him for the name of the false cut and he said it didn't have a name, that I could call it anyway I wanted. Later, I came up with a name, the "EZ AC" false cut. Years later (around 2001) I contacted him through email and let him know of this and he said "OK," that's all. It is still the first false cut I do when I perform. I think I saw him do it on one of the Lasting Impressions Tapes (not DVDs). I need to check it. He does it but does not explain it.

Some of my favorites are his "It's a Small World" routine and "Contact Colors." I taught this effect to Rudy and the Gang in one of the first Saturday Sessions we had here on TMF.

Thanks for the reminder Axel and I will be doing some Colombini's magic today...

Years ago Aldo was giving a lecture at 4F. The performing room has a couple of very large skylights which had opaque covers put on so that the lighting could be controlled internally. One was directly over the performer's table. I forget exactly what Aldo was doing, but he had just delivered a line about what a miracle what had happened was when the cover blew off the skylight. The sun was in the perfect position to cause a column of light to emanate from the skylight directly onto Aldo. He looked up and immediately dropped to his knee and said something like "Yes ! A miracle!" He didn't skip a beat. It was as though it had been planned.

He is missed.

Hey, Mike, given that you're the GOH this year, I can have Jimmy arrange for a repeat if you'd like.
