Any Ventriloquist in the mix here?

I made a talking skull that gets some serious run time and is well received on Halloween but I still have
a couple dolls I started and can't finish because I don't quite understand the controls.

I thought to use the extended grabber arms for old folks for the basis of it but can't seem to get the wire tight enough.  To explain further...  the mouth is mounted on a spring and has a wire pulled lever to open and close it. The wire goes up and over a pulley and down the neck to the "control".  I have yet to be able to deconstruct the cut down arm and then reassemble it and still get the wire tight enough. It slips and I have to start over.

Note: I am NOT tool oriented as I live in a studio apt rather then a shop which is probably a large part of the problem. I may find have to find a kind harted local handy man and have him finish them.

Any suggestions on my plan - or an alternate would be appreciated.

Note: I have never gotten a hold of a professional dummy - so I am guessing on it inner workings.
I don't expect a ton of responses but thought I'd try.  Wish I had a camera to post some pics.

Hay Thanks...

I am in agreement that being funny is of more importance then the Vent's true skill.

I am getting fairly good at it but when I started and slipped no one really cared as long as my material was sufficiently humorous.

We went to a fair recently and I had kids freaking out because I was in  the animal barn doing the voices for the captives in their holding pens.

"Pst.  Hay You.  Ya you! Why don't you come over here with that ice cream cone. Closer, closer, .... I said CLOSER!"

Great fun.

Misjief, I’ve never performed as a ventriloquist. I have however been the dummy. See below under the control of Darren Carr at Geniicon Sydney 2018 Gala dinner. Incredibly funny act.

Darren: That’s great what are you going to do now?

Dummy: Now it’s time for my big finish!

Darren: Your big finish!? What’s your big finish?!

Dummy: I’m gonna drop my pants and sing ‘It’s a small world after all.”

I had a book by Paul Winchel on how to make Dummies.  I forget the name.  I'll try and see if I can't find it.  Sounds like it is just what you need.

You guys are a riot!

If you find that book, drop me a line!  I have several unfinished projects but that one has been on my list forever and I have about 4 or 5 vent heads "nearly" there.  LOL
