I am reminded of that movie which Mel Gibson could read the thoughts of women..well, what would you do ?

You can't predict the lottery numbers because that's something that happens in the future.

Best,

First, grab an ice pick, a bottle of top shelf tequila, a bag of limes. Second, perform a quick prefrontal lobotomy. Either that or move as far away from people as possible while still maintaining some sort of supply line to the world for groceries and sundries. Seriously. The thought of actually being able to read the thoughts of others scares the shit out of me. Can you imagine anything worse?

I would probably still be a performer. I would make a killing and Derren Brown would be out of a job.

i would be a driving that Ferrari I've always wanted in no time, and making copious donations to the homeless, the needy, and animal rights organizations.  Just on the tips working at the bar, alone.  Imagine asking them to think of the name of any person, living or dead, any card in the deck, any number between one and a million, or any word, and nailing it every time? Or just walking up to someone and saying or asking something that let's them know you know exactly what they are thinking at that moment. No need for cards, coins, ropes, props of any kind. I think it would be one heck of a lot of fun - except for maybe being followed around by the paparazzi or having them camp outside your house...

If you can read minds you still can't predict lottery tickets. Not because it happens in the future.
It's because there is no mind to read. The lottery machine is a machine.

And if you could really read minds, the government would have you on their payroll.

The government would lock you up and lose the key ... or worse.  You would be the most dangerous person on Earth.

Being able to read dogs' minds though ... I would like that very much.

I don't think so. You'd know what they were going to do before they do it. You could stay a few steps ahead of everyone OR....preferably, since you would know their deepest thoughts, blackmail the lot of them.

I dunno...

Everyone seems to be assuming that reading minds would be similar to reading a book. Or perhaps more correctly listening to an audio book. Thing is, the mind is what the brain does, and while healthy brains are fairly efficient, minds are not; they are messy. Billions of neurons firing billions of messages across billions of synapses simultaneously. Worries, anxieties, hidden fantasies and dark deliberations we would rather remain private. Thoughts and ideas and notions all scattered and disjointed... Where would you begin to isolate a single, coherent thought?

Assuming the ability to home in on a single thought, to isolate it, and tune it to crystal clarity, could you even understand it? Wouldn't thoughts be cloaked in semiotic mystery, symbolic ciphers translatable only with the proper key?

And again, what if random thoughts gushed from the minds of everyone on the train, in the traffic jam, or in the building? What if you were trapped on a commercial airliner with 300 anxious minds all pouring their thoughts and filling the aluminum tube? What if you picked up a transmission from the mind of a terrorist on her way to detonate a vest filled with explosives? What would you do? Anything? Nothing? What if you heard the thought but were unable to identify the source? What if you clearly "heard" the exact time and location of the detonation? What would you do? Would anyone believe you? Would you be jailed or institutionalized? Talk about a Cassandra complex!

No, while it might be a romantic notion to read the minds of others, I would never wish to be cursed with the gift. My first post on this thread stands as my answer to the posted question.

Anthony,

I imagine mind reading to be similar to what is portrayed in the X-Men Comics with Professor X. Meaning I would be able to send and recieve thoughts with precise control. Even if you didn't have his mind control powers, just being able to read minds with such ease would be incredibly useful in daily life.

I like Anthony's post.

Some of this is part of my show, just said differently here, maybe. So please don't use it.

"When people find out I'm a mind reader, the first thing they usually say is, "Oh yeah, what am I thinking?"
I really don't know and I'm glad I don't.
(there's more here but it's not necessary in this posting)
If I could do what people THINK I can do, walking into a 200 person auditorium would be like walking into a room with 200 radios on, each tuned to a different station, and each radio switching to yet another station every single second. Think about that. It would drive anyone crazy."

That being said, what would mind reading actually be like. We think about one thought every second. Would we have to be speedreaders? If we missed part of a thought would the rest be lost? (Would this explain why we only get parts of some information.) How far do thoughts travel? Do I have to invade you personal space, or can I pick up your thoughts from the other side of a large room? Is a thought projected in a wave like a sound wave? Does the energy of that though wave lose power or does  it remain constant always forging forward unless it hits something that is able to reflect it in another direction? Does that mean I could be in NY and be getting the thoughts of someone in India or perhaps from a being on another planet?

Do ear plugs block out sound? Does shutting down your other senses make the thoughts "louder"? If so, how do we sleep? Can we ever put our mind at rest. Oh wait, our thoughts are going out into the world as well. Can we control our OWN thoughts?

BUT WE HAVE IT ALL WORKED OUT DON'T WE?

I mean, I've seen mind readers ask people to "concentrate on _____" or "send me the first letter of the word you're thinking of?

HOW DO THESE PEOPLE just know how to concentrate and send thoughts? I don't know but they must be good at it because the mind reader is able to get their thoughts every single time. And if spectators can send thoughts at the drop of a hat across the largest stages in the world, why is mind reading so special then?

It could lead to insanity. But in that case, I would have nothing to lose.  And if jailed or institutionalized, no worries, I've been practicing up on my escapes...

Well, Prof X was created specifically for the X-Men universe, so it is no surprise that his particular abilities are in the Goldilocks zone. After all, Shadowcat can phase through solid objects and Nightcrawler can teleport even though the laws of physics clearly demonstrate that in either case they are dying every time they exercise their powers... At least in our world, but not in their universe.

In our universe there are certain immutable laws, and I think Dan nailed it with his analogy to radio signals. Mind reading would require a sender and a receiver. Boosting the signal would require a power source: electrochemically-generated electrical impulses. The receiver would require a similar power source to capture and translate the signal into an understandable message. Consequently the airwaves would be filled with millions of thoughts, all combining for attention with WiFi signals, radio waves, satellite transmissions... What a mess! Once again science mucks everything up!!!

Magic-Aly - LOL! Best of luck with those rakes and tension bars!

Since (real) mind reading doesn't exist and this is a completely hypothetical situation, I think my theory of having the powers of Professor X is just as reasonable as any other theory. Plus X-Men is my favorite comic book series and I want to be Profesor X [wink]

So be it. Truth is, with certain limited exceptions, comic book movies being among them, I am the guy who bitches about the careless way that science is depicted on film. Oh, I don't mind giving a bit of leeway in the interest of entertainment, but sometimes it's just too much...

I always tell people that if you are trying to receive a transmission at 98.5 fm and I am broadcasting at 104.5 fm..your going to miss it, the radio waves need to be a match, for you to receive what I am sending. The Law of Attraction philosophy can be used here as a ruse, or at least some of it makes for interesting patter..i.e " This is a vibrational universe & we are vibrational beings " etc, etc.

(((Just write down your dominate thought on this piece of paper )))

It's a nice way of getting the participant to write their thought down on paper.

This has turned out to be a interesting thread.

So... We're headed directly into hard solipsism: everyone constructs their own universe where everyone else within are mental figments - avatars - of the dimension's creator. Individual creators would communicate, share ideas, and perhaps even plot to conquer other dimensions in order to remake them in their own images. Sort of interdimensional cosmic empire-building.  You know, there's some interesting discussion to be had about such a universe...

When the thread began the first thought that entered my mind was that I’d likely go insane. Being in a crowded room with a thousand-and-one people gabbing non-stop drives me up the wall as it is. But I can at least escape that brand of bedlam. Sort of.

Not so with all the jabbering minds at large. Absolute Hell.

If, however, I could shut them out and focus on one thing/mind at a time, I’d get in pouch with Randi and challenge him to resurrect his challenge. And see how he gets out of paying.  [smile]  [smile]

Once you met Randi's challenge (or perhaps even before), you would know whether or not Randi would or could pay, and if not, what his plan of avoidance was.
And if he failed to make good on his offer, then Uri Geller would have a field day...

Whoops, I just learned that it is a moot point:

So, further investigation reveals that Randi retired from the James Randi Educational Foundation (JREF), and according to the Board of Directors, the Foundation plans on:

"...continuing the Million Dollar Challenge as a means for educating the public about paranormal claims, but the process for consideration of claims has been changed effective September 1, 2015.  No application submitted under the previous procedures or relying in whole or in part on the previously published terms of the Challenge will be considered."

The Board further explains that: "Over the years, we have spent a great deal of time dealing with claims ranging from yet another dowsing claim to some VERY eccentric and untestable claims. The overwhelming majority refused to fill out the application or even state a claim that can be tested. Some of them show up in person and demand to be tested while they wait. We can no longer justify the resources to interact with these people."

"Effective immediately, JREF will no longer accept applications directly from people claiming to have a paranormal power. Previously available Application Forms shall not be used and will be rejected without any review of the contents. We anticipate providing minimum required protocols for the preliminary test early next year. No one should make any effort to pursue the Challenge until those minimum required protocols are issued. The only exception is that any established psychic may contact JREF via email to be tested directly (preferably with an independent, third party TV crew.)"

See:

http://web.randi.org/home/jref-status

The excerpts above were copied from a posting by the JREF in September 2015, and I have not been able to find any more recent postings...
