I got the idea for it from the following joke I heard today:

"There was a magician driving down a street, and then he turned into a driveway".

A passing motorist was so astonished, she turned into a sidestreet.

This not a joke exactly, although I think it's very funny. It's something I came up many moons ago.

Inspired, of course by a conversation in "Silver Blaze".

“Is there any other point to which you would wish to draw my attention?”

“The curious incident of the magician with the pack of cards.”

“But the magician did nothing with the pack of cards.”

“That was the curious incident.”

First response was from 13 years ago. I’m guessing the joke is even older than that.

Thanks Dan and you're right , it is an old-timer. I think the first time I heard it was "turned in an alley". I still think it's very funny. And well done Jennifer for adding another "pathway" as Harry Lorayne used to say.

And I do like my own "dog in the night-time" pastiche, he says modestly. [smile]

I remember when I was a kid and got distracted by some noisy vehicle and then turned my head back to look forward and smacked right into a pole.

I've done that. Mind you these days I don't need a pole or post. I just fall down.  [smile]

I like the following:

Three guys walk into a bar.
The fourth one ducked.

Now change/modify that to magician.

Three magicians turn into a bar.
The fourth one ducked.

Yeah, it just doesn't work.
They need to walk into a bar but then the punchline doesn't work.

This doesn't work either. Far too subtle or convoluted. Take your pick. But I think it has some sort of promise.

Three magicians called Elmsley and a woman called Jordan walked into a bar.
The bartender thought there were four men.

Yeah, I agree that it needs some tweaking, but there's something there.

Yes, but can you explain why we park on a driveway and drive on a parkway?

I think it would be a funny "inside joke" when performing to a mixed group of laypersons and magicians to do a trick with the four Kings and call them the four counts, Count Elmsley, Count Hamman, Count Jordan and Count Veeser.
I'm glad comedy isn't my day job.

Yes, because on a driveway you are free to come and go as you please You are in control.
However, on a parkway - there's always traffic and it eventually turns into a parking lot.
So, it's named so as not to disappoint!!
