I hate giving reviews. Either I hate the routine and don't want to say anything negative about it; or I love it and want to keep it to myself. I really considered keeping this download to myself and never telling people about it... but I also want to see menatlism thrive. So that means I want to give an honest review about a download by Jason Sobel called ESPidus Novus.

I purchased this back in March and have been using it for the past two months.  Anytime I need something quick and easy to perform, this is one of the routines I go with. It is a three phase routine that is well structured, well motivated, and highly engaging/entertaining. It is only limited by the performer using it. That means you get to decide how dynamic and entertaining it's going to be.

Overview: You have a participant write down some information on a business card. The card is folded and you play a quick game of which hand with the spectator. After finding the business card twice, you reveal an ESP sign they have been thinking of. You end the routine by revealing a city or pin code (or anything else you want to reveal). 3 reveals, 100%, and no complicated process. All you need is a pen and a business card.

Is this a groundbreaking idea in the art of mentalism? No.
Is this the most original routine I've ever seen? No. Most people will be familiar with part of the method.

That being said, this routine has obviously been road tested. He offers subtleties that only working pro's can give. What you pay for is the framework for a really simple and powerful routine. Also as a bonus, he teaches a way to do this routine for multiple people at the same time. You will also see him perform this routine in studio multiple times! (Which is a nice treat because many mentalism products never offer live performances)

I can honestly say that this routine has been one of the best purchases I have made in the past few years. Yes, I said years. I have made my own variations on the routine that allow me to stretch out the time and engage more people. But I still use Jason's basic handling all the time. I truly can't recommend this download enough. We need more mentalism like this.

Thanks, Nathan. I recall seeing the trailer for the effect months back, but with so many "new" tricks hitting the market it's difficult to separate the wheat from the chaff. Having TMF members who've purchased and reviewed things comment on them here, well, it makes a big difference.

No problem, Anthony! Like I mentioned in my post- I hate reviewing products. I don't like speaking ill of products because my mom told me if I had nothing nice to say, it's better to not speak at all. I also hate reviewing products I like because a part of me is selfish and wants to keep all the good material to myself.

But I'm noticing a trend in mentalism where methods are becoming overly complex, aren't workable in many venues, and rely on long drawn out processes. I think there is value in some of those ideas, I really do. I perform some propless material. But I also want to shine a light on routines like this that are simple, powerful, and workable. I also feel like people should actually go out and work a product in real performances (not just the wife/girlfriend test) before reviewing it.

I also purchased the download, and agree 100% with Nathan's review.  I haven't practiced it to the point of performance readiness yet but I'm working on it.

The video is great - combining live performances with demonstration and discussion of the method.  The highlight is when Jason literally gets down off his soapbox 😉
