Hi!

I am a 23 year old newbie magician, learning magic to keep my mind off cancer. I am planning a "haunted" magic, and needed advice on how to improve performance. Right now the ending and even procedure isn't really mind-blowing or very engaging. Any advice would be very very helpful!!

So this is what I plan.

Before starting the magic I will give the spectator a book. I will spookily ask them if they believe the dead can communicate to them.

I will then take out some picture cards, all face down and ask them to put their hand over the one that makes them feel something strange. I will lock the chosen card in a box so I don't change it.

I will also make them choose a card out of a deck of playing cards.

I will then ask them 8 weapons they can think of that can be used to murder. I will write them on paper, make balls out of them, mix the balls, and ask them to choose a ball. Depending on what ball they choose, I might select or remove the area of their selections, until the "chosen ball" remains.

I will ask them again if they believe the dead can communicate to them.

Now I will tell them, they could have felt something with anyone but they choose picture XYZ (taking out their picture from the box). They could have chosen any weapon, but they chose weapon ABC (unrolling their ball).

Now, I will ask them to open the playing card. The card number is the page number they have to go on the book. And I will ask them to read what the page says.

It will say "I person XYZ is going to be communicate with you today. I was (blah blah), I was murdered using the weapon ABC. But why am I telling you all this? Why do we share a connection? Because 20 years back, I died on the very place you are sitting right now at [name of the building we are in]."

Was this inspired by Elizabeth on Britain's Got Talent? Where she was in the basement of the theatre?

You're never going to get the atmosphere if you're doing it in your own home of friend's home. Or probably not in a very old building. or as a stand alone piece. besides, it is too similar to the BGT piece.

Why not work on something based on the old spirit seances  where spirits wrote messages on chalk boards? I'd suggest not using playing cards. Do you have Annemann's Practical Mental Effects" book? It can be picked up cheaply these days as a Dover publication. An enjoyable read. You'd get lots of ideas from that. "The Whim of Tituba" comes to mind from that book if I'm remembering correctly.

Sorry to hear you are ill. hope your treatments are working for you.

Hey, yourself, and welcome to TMF. Sorry to hear about your malady and wish you nothing but the best.

While not directly related to your request, here's something you might consider. It's a pretty cool effect, not too difficult to perform, and if the right conditions are set, it is really spooky. I purchase this based on a recommendation from someone here on the forum. While I have performed it only three times - and will be performing it again in the fall - it really has worked out well for me. I enjoy presenting "story magic", so this fits. At any rate, see what you think.

The only magic I'm interested in concerning you, is your total and complete recovery.

Be positive and allow nothing, to get you down.

Believe that a higher power WILL make you whole.

And know that even though I have never met you, that I love you and will pray for your recovery.

God Speed!

I echo all the recommendations that have been given, and here are a couple more:

What you've got is a good start - but it's kind of all over the place: weapons written on slips of paper, a playing card (which serves as a number) locked in a box, a book in which a dead person somehow wrote a message after their death.   There's just too much going on.

So my advice is to work backwards from the effect you are trying to achieve.  Something like this (but you will want to change this to match your own desire):

Effect:The volunteer should feel that a person who was murdered long ago has reached out to them with a personal message.

Question:  What is the purpose of the message?  Does the murder victim seek justice?  Do they seek help in "resting easy"?
Question:  What makes the message personal?  Does the message contain the volunteer's name or other descriptive details?  Or does it describe their recent actions (eg a card they just selected).  If so, why does the murder victim care?
Question:  Under what conditions did the murder victim write the message?  Did they have a premonition?  Was the message written soon after death, or was it written just moments ago?
Question:  How is the message discovered?  Does the volunteer need to carry out a procedure to find it?  Is it in some obvious but previously unnoticed location?

Etc etc.

Now while writing these questions, I had a thought ... what if the message is not from the victim, but from the murderer?  He's cursed to wander this earth as a ghost until he can atone for his crime by saving a life.  The message ends with a cryptic warning for the volunteer, something like "For the sake of your soul, stay away from ladders."

Anyway, once you have a really clear idea what the effect is and how the pieces hang together, you can work on constructing a method to make it work.  And simplify, simplify, simplify.

Good luck (with magic and with your health)

Robin

Thanks a lot! I didn't intend but it turned out to be quite similar to Elizabeth's performance. The book and the trick you suggested look awesome. Let me try thinking something around that.

Wow! It looks spooky and interesting. I am based out of India and we don't have these things here, plus with currency differences they become too expensive for me to afford. Let me see if I can get something like this here.

These are really good suggestions I didn't even think of. Let me try more on these lines. I will post my refined idea again requesting your inputs. Thanks a lot for your detailed explanation!
