According to some news reports, Daryl was found dead in a closet at the Magic Castle, they gave cause of death as suicide.  Horrible week for magic and mentalism.

How tragic all this has been. He was a great teacher. The 2nd teaching tape I ever got was Daryl's. I still use a bunch of the moves I learned from him.

This is such sad news. Daryl was one of the most upbeat and nicest guys in magic. I am stunned.

TomG and I saw him lecture in my shop in 1991. He autographed a playing card, the 2 of hearts, and a piece of paper that said 'Thanks again for having me lecture. He was such a pleasure. So sad.

What the heck?? That is horrible and tragic news. I'm shocked and saddened.

Someone so talented and seemingly happy...

I'm saying a prayer for his family and friends as they mourn this devastating loss.

I met Daryl in 1980 at the Desert Magic Seminar in Las Vegas. He was just getting off the ground. I bought Secrets of A "Puerto Rican Gambler" from him. It's autographed:

To Heavywork Mike. Thank you for the eight big ones. Enjoy. Daryl 3-80

What a tremendous loss.

Very sad news to hear -- although I never had the chance to meet him, I am told by everyone that he was an especially nice guy. I only know him through his tapes -- he was a remarkable performer and teacher; he will be missed by us all. johnny

Daryl was such a bright light. Infectious charisma, boundless energy, rapid-fire humor, good looks and wicked-nasty chops combined to fashion one of the finest performers in magic. He was working the Parlor at the Castle this week. This is where I saw him a decade ago. He owned the room and left the crowd wobbling from laughter and astonishment.

For those who loved and admired Daryl's valuable contributions to our art, for those inspired by his technique and showmanship and for those who knew the man as a generous, kind and light-hearted soul, this final dark and tragic mystery will leave us empty and confounded. I pray for the many who loved him and for all mired in deep despair and hopelessness--that they find the will to survive.

His giggle got on my nerves, but he was a great card man. I enjoy many of his contributions to the art. I have to say, if what they say about the way he was found is true, I cannot understand someone doing that in a place as honored and treasured as the Castle. And he always treated that place well, as shown by his many appearances there. Very strange, very sad too. And so soon after another great, Bob Cassidy.
Well, time passes and we lose people.  Hopefully no backlash against the Castle.

Sad

Untreated mentally ill people are really not the people we know and love.
And sometimes even when they're treated they may not be the same.
And they often do things which are contrary to their character.

Trust me-- I know.  [bawl]

Before performing today at Fordham University, I received a link from a friend saying a magician was found dead at the Castle of an apparent suicide. I took a quick look at the story, but didn't see the name of the magician. I then performed for an audience of ~100 people. My set included Daryl's Rainbow Ropes, one of my favorite stand-up routines. At a nearby restaurant afterward, I realized IT WAS DARYL!...the most upbeat magician since Doug Henning! I have learned so much from him over the years from seven of his DVDs and the two live lectures I attended. So tragic. I feel so sorry for his family as well as for the magic community. I hope it wasn't suicide. I know it won't bring him back, but at least his soul can rest a bit easier in peace.

I am very sad about all this. I watch some of Daryl's instructional videos almost every week. If it wasn't for his Ambitious Card video, I would have NO ambitious card routine at all, or know many sleights that I had to learn as I was building one.

The "green place" is having a field day with all this, because of course they are. Who cares if he died from this, that or the other?! A beloved member of the community has died, his family, friends, colleagues and fans are in mourning, so why not rise above and pay tribute to him instead of .... well, whatever they seem to be doing. Magicians helping magicians indeed! (I should really just stay in here and stop checking that place out!)

Also equally sadly, hardly anyone is talking about Bob Cassidy because the sensational news overshadows the 'ordinary'. Ah well.

The passing of Bob Cassidy and Daryl, as sad/tragic as they may be, allows us to reflect on how fortunate we were to have had them as inspiration for our own endeavors in magic. Death is the ultimate reminder of how fortunate we are to have been given life and the special people we encounter during the brief time we have been blessed to grace this planet.

The greatest tribute we pay to those who go before us is to honor them through the continued good deeds and accomplishments in our daily lives that they instilled during theirs.

Peace be with their souls.

RIP Daryl.  Sincere condolences to all who knew him, especially his family.  So talented and gifted to create so many effects, and carry them out flawlessly. If you haven't read Mr. Swiss' account of Daryl at the Lyons Den, you ought.  The videos in the write up are wonderful too, especially his Cardboard Chameleons.  Effortless.

Vlad,
There's some confusion going on here, and it's coming out of LA.  While the Reuters story quotes a medical examiner's watch commander as saying Daryl's death was an accident...a statement that raises far more questions than it answers...the LA Coroner's website today confirms that his death was a suicide.

Here's the link if you'd like to check it for yourself:  https://goo.gl/kuo3pF.

Regardless, this is a tragedy and it's gonna take a while for our community to recover from this one.

Using Dayl's death as a way to take a shot at another forum, no matter what you think of them, isn't fair.

Daryl will be missed by a lot of us, some who knew him personally, and others who knew him though his contributions to the craft.

I was fortunate enough to meet Daryl when he lectured in Cleveland, Ohio years ago. He was a true professional

His Encyclopedia of Card Sleights is an important part of my DVD library.

Prayers offered for all those he left behind. God bless you, Daryl.

Still sad about this, but depression is a horrible thing.  Years ago I was talking to Tom Mullica about Red Skelton.  He said Red was always pretty depressed until he got in front of an audience, then he was totally animated.

One of my fond memories was taking Daryl and Alison out to supper before a lecture, think this was shortly after they were married. Fantastic people. Last I saw Daryl was at the Genii Bash a few years ago, he attended every lecture.

Prayers for his family and friends.

From the Magic Castle's Facebook page:

PLEASE DONATE TO THE DARYL EASTON FAMILY FUND
The office at the Magic Castle has received calls from members and magicians around the world, asking how one can offer support and donations to the Daryl Easton family.

The Academy of Magical Arts has now established a fund to receive donations for Alison Easton, Daryl’s wife, and their two daughters. You can also send bereavement cards for Alison to the AMA offices as well, who will forward them to the family.

If you would like to make a donation to the family, please send a check payable to “The Academy of Magical Arts, Easton Family Fund” to:

The Academy of Magical Arts
ATT: Daryl Easton Family Fund
7001 Franklin Ave
Hollywood CA 90028

If you would like to donate via credit card, please call Trish Alaskey at 323-851-3313 ext. 301.

The Academy will work with Alison and the family, and pick a date in the future to hold a memorial for Daryl. If you have any questions, please email the General Manager, Joe Furlow, at: jfurlow@magiccastle.com.

Beautifully written and heartfelt sentiment copied and pasted from Michael Ammar's Facebook page. Worth sharing here:

There’s a hole in the curtain. There in the Parlor of the Magic Castle; it’s hidden in one of the folds. Performers can check audiences or watch fellow performers. Sometimes Daryl or I would watch an audience for the other - gauging the response to a move or a bit of misdirection. We probably watched more performances that way than from the audience.

Friday night Daryl made a heartbreaking decision. He chose to pass on his own terms; nullifying an infinity of possible solutions or opportunities and devastating those closest to him with thoughts that maybe we could have said or done something, or with guilt over having missed any warning signs.

But there were no clues on Thursday about would happen the next day, and what did happen was nothing like the bizarre images suggested by the media. Castle security cameras revealed on that day there was no insanity, alcohol or conflicts, and no crushing anxiety or depression. Daryl was calm, collected and serene.

I believe every corner of every room was so full of joy, laughter and happiness, he simply decided to stay forever. Those who knew Daryl, understand there was a beautiful, elegant simplicity to his favorite magic methods. Well… somehow… in ways we’ll never understand, he decided there was a simple path to the peace he wanted.

There was nothing salacious, there was no turmoil; there was just a misguided desire to find peace and to stay where he could watch magic forever - through the hole in the curtain.

Tommorow is our next IBM meeting for those in my area. The theme is "Tricks Learned from Daryl." I think it's nice that we're going to meet up and pay tribute to this magician.
I actually put together my ambitious card routine thanks to him. For sure i'll do that.
