Since we now have a gambling/con section, it'd be nice to gather some thoughts on the classic cons.

I have Marc De Souza's Chain Gang, his presentation is a history of the game while you have two spectator's play the game for money ( which you provide them with ). His routine has some very fancy patterns in it unlike the Whit Hayden's chain. Both are very entertaining.

I am sure I have the VHS tape  somewhere stored in a box like my other tapes, however I don't know what I did with my chain lol.

As for the three card monte the best version I've seen is Gaeton Bloom's Color Monte, this was sold as a dealer item, but it could be adapted to a gambling routine if you wanted to do that. It's a flat monte routine with gimmicks cards. This was put out some 15 or 20 years ago, I don't know if you can still buy it today or not.

Best,

I have GB's monte here somewhere, but prefer ungimmicked.   Trouble I find with a lot of the gambling effects/demos is that they are too long, sort of, look how many moves I can do with the shells/monte/chain.  I like the short and sweet.
On the Fast Company DVD Damien Nieman has a quick monte that doesn't put the spectator at odds with the performer.  As for shells, Frank Garcia's shows a few moves, the finale and done.

David Roth performed an Endless Chain routine at Abbott's Close Up one year. It's the best I have seen. Very engaging.

Whit Haydn and Chef Anton have some publications dealing with these items. They are some of the best items on these subjects IMO.

I think it takes a lot of real world practice to get good at the timing and presentation that's needed to make these sorts of things solid performance pieces.

Check out my Monte Plus/Plus item in Section V of ONLY MY APOCALYPSE. Impromptu anytime, any where, any deck, thing with which I've taken it some knowledgeable people who do the standard 3-card monte.

Great choices up there. Especially Mr. Lorayne's impromptu & with any deck.

I really like this one:

I had the joy of watching Whit Haydn perform his three shell routing at the Magic Castle a few weeks ago. It was absolutely incredible!

I'm not sure that I would ever perform it, but his routine is available for purchase here:

If you can find it, I'll take it off your hands for a couple of bucks.

It's a great book if your putting a gambling demo together. Much like a blueprint.

A routine I love doing is Frank Garcia's Three Shell Game. I did it for about 20 years and even showed it in a local TV News program (now gone) in my city in the central part of Mexico. I have the recording somewhere but it is in Spanish. I am sorry to say that I have not performed it in a long time. Now that you helped bring this memory back, I will practice it to perform it again. I even made my own shells about 30 years ago. I remember that I spent one whole day choosing, splitting (the whole nut), sanding and preparing the shells and cutting and painting a sponge "pea" and then practising until it got to the point I liked the performance. I must have performed it many times and always got a great reaction from the audience. That is why I chose to perform it on the local TV station.

Here is Frank performing it:

Thanks for helping me bring these memories back...

Was the one with the $14 Dollar kicker?

I did a parlor show yesterday at a Senior Center and performed P.Gordon's "Head to Head" Poker but used Jumbo cards. (Patter was "to insure the audience that I was not manipulating the cards like a pocket cheat"....

It was interesting doing a Charlier Shuffle with 52 jumbo cards.  I also use the Rosetta Shuffle to maintain the stock.....

It played very well...

Thanks Paul Gordon and all who claim ownership of this marvelous little routine!

Tommy

Hi Tommy. What do you mean by "all who claim ownership to this marvellous little routine."?? It's my routine and has been since I first published it in 1984. Cheers, PG

No, the gimmicked card is a double card and the kicker ending is when you play the game with only two cards, yet they still can't find it.

We had a good set of references on the scoundrels wiki, but it's gone now. Here's the wayback archive.

Hey Paul! It was just a bit of facetious humor. I sometimes smile to myself when some of our magic brethren claim origin to effects that have been around for years.

As you know I am a big fan of your routines and always see them as " go-to" effects when entertaining the lay public.

Best wishes!

Tommy

I believe I did see a video from England (?) with someone throwing disks.  Neat idea and presentation, but for me I'll stick with the standards.
