In today's Masterclass at Vanishing Inc, Asi shared a calculator trick he likes to do with people in Zoom sessions. It was amazing.  He gave credit to Harry Lorayne and his book Mathematical Wizardry: Mathematical Phenomenon of the Number 9.

Needless to say I'll be buying this Mathematical Wizardry book soon.  (Just like I bought other books Asi keeps mentioning:  Books of Wonder, Card College, etc..  Sounds like Books of Wonder is loaded with GOLD as well.)

So I'll have three great books by Harry in my collection soon 😉.   1) The Magic Book 2) One of his memory books 3) Mathematical Wizardry.

Would you mind describing the effect at all? I ask because I have Mathematical Wizardry (haven't worked through all of it), and looking at the table of contents I don't see any effect of that name, so I'm very curious which of the many incredible effects in there was taught in the Masterclass! There are many amazing numerical phenomena described in the book, and a lot of them involve the number nine 😃 Was it the "missing digit" effect perhaps?

Asi told spectator to read off all digits but exclude a digit, and using "voice detection", he told him the missing digit.. but he went even further with it as it progressed.  It was crazy!

The masterclass is definitely worth it at $75 -- so much gold in it.  You get all the edited recordings afterwards as well.  Also we get to meet up with Asi in a zoom sesson hangout next Sunday.

Asi said he was going to think of a two digit number and asked spectator to do same.  Asi said 27 and the spectator didn't tell Asi his two digit number and the spectator multiplied the two digits together.  The spectator read off the total omitting a digit.  And by "voice detection" figured out which digit was missing.  He then told spectator to multiply again by a 1 or 2 digit number and read them off.. he detected the second missing digit as well.

Asi said this trick is also useful to make a magic square for a couple spectators.  He knows the missing digits for both spectators (with calculator trick) then quickly draws up a magic square and it totals their combined number the were thinking of.  (Of course the number would have to be 34 to 99 to do it, but it should be in most cases).

So I can tell Asi reads a lot of Harry Lorayne number, puzzle and mentalism stuff 😉.

Rudy taught the missing digit trick (or a version of it) in his Apocalypse Now series. It is a fun impromptu trick.

One of the facts of life is that someday you will be fooled by a trick that is explained in a book sitting on your shelf.  Many tricks just don't "read" well.  But if you see someone perform them with a good presentation, it changes your mind.

Harry Lorayne's 'The Magic Book' is jam-packed full of all kinds of wonderful magical items. You can make a living using nothing more than the items in the book and a massive dose of personality... Harry always gives us the greatest material to work with 👍

Another thumbs up for Mathematical Wizardry. I searched for the book for several years but never could find it until Harry reprinted it - at which point I snatched up a copy immediately. Seems to be one of those books rarely re-sold.

And for anyone with a general interest in improving math skills, seek out a copy of Harry's Miracle Math. For me it's been a great resource to help my daughter with some skills not taught in her school. I've bought several copies over the years to give away to family and friends.

Just as an FYI: there's a PDF here: https://store.conjuringarts.org/product/mathematical-wizardry-by-harry-lorayne-text-based-pdf-with-bookmarks/ . I know it can't replace the feel of a fresh new book, though!

Thanks for mentioning its availability in PDF form.

Harry has made it available on his website for the same price: https://www.harryloraynemagic.com/shop/mathematical-wizardry-ebook

I always want to buy it directly from the creator when possible 😉

Thanks Matt. I didn't realize that Conjuring Arts are the ones who send the link. Good to know.
