I'm planning on performing for my birthday party next year but I can't decide which routine to do as the closing act. Which one do you guys think is more impressive for lay audience? 52 Shades of Red of Dream Act by Shin Lim?

Interesting question. First of all, I think it's very generous of you to perform magic to your guests on your birthday. Secondly, either of the routines mentioned can be impressive to a lay audience given the performer puts in the time to practice and present them. Why not perform both? After all it's your birthday!

I think perhaps the most impressive finale for an audience of people who know and like you would be a finale not already intimately associated with the style and aesthetic of some other guy. If it's your birthday party and they're there for you, be you. Whatever that means.

Or just do whichever one you like best and have a good time. It's your birthday, after all.

I will perform both at the end of my performance. So, my question is about which one is more impressive to lay audience and more worthy to be performed last?

For those of you who are not familiar, here are the links to the routine:

Is your audience (friends/family) familiar with Shin Lim and these two routines?
Have you reworked these routines and made them your own so they don’t look like “As Seen on TV.”

Because if your audience is aware of these routines already and you’re doing them the same way as Shin Lim, this could end one of three ways:

1. That was great, it was just like that guy on TV.
2. That sucked, the guy on TV did it so much better.
3. That was great, even better than that guy on TV.

Either way, you’re getting compared to “that guy on TV” which to me, makes YOU and whatever YOU are doing less impressive.

Just my opinion.

Hi. I agree with the views of others about being yourself. That been said,  it also seems difficult to me to vote the closing act, without knowing what the rest of the performance looks like. Kind of decide the ending for a novel without reading the previous chapters. So, maybe can you tell a little more about your act?
