No wonder Mike has been very quiet these days... Just look at this (behind Meir Yedid):

I knew he was going there (he told us he was going) but didn't know he was the Guest of Honor! Congrats Mike! And of course congrats as well for your new book!

Cool! Congratulations indeed.

My copy of Tesseract arrived on Tuesday. Last night I sat down, opened it, and spent a pleasurable couple of hours going through it. This is going to sound like hyperbole, but I have to tell you that this book is filled with excellent material. There's truly something for everyone, from beginner to advanced. I plan on writing a review in the next week or so, but in the meantime, here's a hearty endorsement for what could well be the book of the year.

It is always nice to see helpful, humble practitioners of our art receive honors such as this.  Well done Mike!

Mike is not just an incredibly talented and knowledgeable magician, he’s also a generous and genuinely nice guy. I love to see him getting the recognition that he’s earned and deserves.

We’re blessed to have him as a member of this community!

Just being at FFFF is an honor in itself (since attendance is strictly by invitation only).  So being chosen as the Guest of Honor is - in my opinion - one of the highest achievements for a close-up magician.

Congratulations, Mike!  And well deserved!

I've known Mike for a few years now and like everyone else here on TMF, you cannot help but be impressed with Mike's GENUINE willingness to help others as much as his tremendous knowledge of magic.  Of course, it's always fun to watch his amazing abilities whenever he performs -- that is true magic in and of itself!  I'm sure everyone here is glad for his well-deserved praise and recognition, and at the 4F Convention that amounts to being one of the top "aces" in a very classy deck of participants known world-wide.   For those of you you haven't seen or read his latest book yet -- Anthony Vinson is again "right on the money" -- it is truly an amazing book filled with powerful and practical magic.  I may have a biased opinion here, but I'll wager his book will be "flying" off the shelf for years to come.   WELL DONE MIKE -  it couldn't happen to a nicer guy! -- johnny

Just back from Obie's FFFF - Mike was an outstanding Guest of Honour.  His lecture was packed with killer material, he organized (as he always does) a fantastic Pat Page Memorial Workshop, he performed a great act during one of the shows, and (as you would expect) he endured with good humour the inevitable ribbing to which the GOH is subjected.

Each year the convention ends with the announcement of the MVP, voted on by all the attendees.  The 2019 MVP is Maria Schwieter, a very talented magician who happens to be married to Mike!

WOW! I rolled in two hours ago. I worked the close up show at MAWNY on Sunday. It's a small convention that follows 4F in the same Hotel. Much fun! We stayed over and left this morning facing an 8 hour drive. We talked about the convention the whole way and suddenly we were home.

Many thanks for all the kind words, guys! It is much appreciated. I'm definitely glad the spotlight is off me! It was a humbling experience indeed, but also an experience I won't ever forget.

My wife Maria opened my lecture with an appearance by my "mom." Her character is an old crotchety lady. I'll post the video once I get a little sleep. It's really hilarious. The convention dragged a little bit on Wednesday and Thursday afternoon. The audiences seemed a little dead to me and others verified that when I brought up the subject. Maria really rocked the room with a comedy appearance as my mom, who apparently was "with" Dai Vernon. I think she was responsible for getting the convention on track. The "vibe" on Friday and Saturday was significantly better. So ultimately the convention was a blast.

Steve Beam on Friday and Bargatze and Merrill on Saturday were in full "roast" mode. They traditionally rough up the GOH and they did a good job. I have some bruises but managed to survive.

Maria has been busy with her business but wants to do more with magic. I think she'll join our group in the near future.

Meanwhile, it's time to pour some wine and watch the Game of Thrones from yesterday. Then Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz............

The reason that many of us were feeling subdued at the start of this year's FFFF was very sad: one of our FFFF friends, Thomas Blacke, suffered a heart attack and died on Wednesday evening, shortly after the convention started.  He was in his early 50's and appeared to be in good health - his sudden death was a shock to us all.

Here is his bio on Lybrary.com:  https://www.lybrary.com/thomas-blacke-m-153551.html

and here is his obituary:  https://www.nardolillofh.com/notices/Thomas-CarrierakaThomasBlacke

and here is a group photo from 2015 - Thomas is at the front of the group:  https://www.flickr.com/photos/saomik/20127197655/in/album-72157655619261759/

(Others in the photo:  Gene Protas, Christian Schenk, Matt Episcopo, Simon Lane, Shawn Farquhar, Andy Quinn, Daryl Harris, Dwight Redman, Ed Eckl, Christian Painter, Robin Dawes, William Watt, Robert Davis, Keith Fields)

Getting this year's FFFF back on track was a challenge, and I would certainly agree that both Mike and Maria should get credit for it.

Congrats again Pops!

It was great seeing you, Robin, and the rest of the gang. I think having your mom show-up to your lecture helped everyone bounce back.

Great seeing you Ryan.

After a bit of a slow start, the convention really rocked out. My "mom" with Steve Bargatze was a memorable event! I should post the video.
