Hello! I have recently been working on card effects using the cull (specifically, Kimlat's Road Runner). Although I am getting comfortable executing the cull while standing, it feels rather awkward to me when seated at a table. I know that culling can be a bit "angly" ; when seated, I tilt the spread downward slightly towards the table (as much as I possibly can without looking completely unnatural), but I'm still concerned about inadvertently flashing the cards moving under the spread. Are there any tips any one might offer with this situation? I know everyone is busy -- any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance! johnny

Darned if I can do a cull either seated or standing! Another "standard" I can't do at all is a pinky count. Of course, I can do most others (not passes or diagonal palm shifts!) pretty well.

I'm right handed so I start with the deck in my left hand.
I turn my body so that my hands are about 10 o'clock and then cull.
(Note: this position brings your left elbow closer to your side and your right arm going across your torso.)
Your bad side is your left side anywhere from 6 to 10 o'clock but ideally no one is seated there.

Thanks for the fast responses. Mr. Lorayne -- It's great to get a post directly from you -- when a giant can't do the move, it somehow makes me feel a little better -- If only I could do all the other sleights you do so well (but I am working on them)! EvilDan -- thanks for your info -- I will definitely try that out (I have been placing my hands directly in front of me close to the table -- changing my whole position as you suggested never occured to me)! I'm thinking if I added apporpriate patter ("let me show you this way so all of you can see the cards a little better") or something like that, it might even set up turning a little sideways. Anyway, thanks again guys....

Do you want to do specific effects or routines that depend on a cull? If not, why bother? Of course, my The Great Divide is pretty close to a cull - it use it when I want to set reds/blacks or 13 spades, etc. I simply do not ever need to depend on "regular" culls. Nor do I ever need to depend on a pinky count. I can write a book - or at least a pamphlet! - on how to set a specific number of cards at top.

So, my point is, I don't bother trying to learn/do moves when I have easier ways to do the "necessary." (One of the things I said/say in the foreword of THE MAGIC BOOK, which I originally wrote for the public) is - "I will save you the forty years that I spent learning sleights I never used!"
