I was surprised that Don Alan hadn't yet been the subject of a Who's Who thread, so here you go.

Anyone that has studied the Chop Cup, should be very familiar with Don's name.  There have even been cups that have carried his moniker.

Don was an innovator of loading techniques, particularly large, solid loads such as metal nuts and ball bearings.

I'll begin with this article which has some interesting things in it.

Please feel free to add stuff to it.

Here's a clip of note...notice how he asks the volunteers names and then actually remembers them and uses them!  How many times do folks ask for their names and later cannot remember nor do they actually use them.

And you have to include his signature effect.  I noticed Don is wearing the traditional "magician's ring" on his right pinky.  His technique on the large loads is exceptional.

"Don Alan's Big Deal" is a favourite of mine. It was all over the dealers back in the mi 70s and early 80s. Seems to have gone on holiday of late.

Here he is in England, 40 years ago, with Alma Cogan---the girl with the giggle in her voice---and Pearl Carr and Teddy Johnson.

I can remember going to a Don Alan lecture. I got to see him work at a Steel Convention in Pittsburgh about 3 years later. He didn't remember my name immediately but he did remember where he saw me last. Amazing.

I got to see his set and I wanted to know when he was up again as I wanted to bring a friend over to watch. It turned out it was his last for the day but he told me to bring the guy over and he would be glad to do something. (not bad for a paid pro that had been working all day) He performed cigarette thru quarter for the guy showing him the front and me the back. (Funny even now)

Later I got to know him a bit better. A gentleman at every level and probably one of the most ripped off performers of all time.

Great story! Yeah, he had the infamous "controversial " lecture in 1975 where he gave the magic community a "dressing down". Many were offended, but many were also guilty.

I have the book, In a Class By Himself, and Magic Ranch DVD collection that was mentioned in the article. Do yourselves a favor, if you don't already have them, get them!

It's nice that there are videos of Don in his prime. Not the case for a lot of magicians.
