I must say that I have to give Socrates I lot of credit here, I have learned an awful lot from him mostly in the PM"s...I wish that I was as smart as he is, he is also very motivating as he lead me to go out and show my wares ( so to speak ) to a local casino & cardroom showing my Crooked Gambling Show, without him pushing me to do it...I would have never done it. Unfortnately, the casino was going to pay me less than minimum wage, so I turned them down.

Both Socrates and I both have an interest in the author Robert Moss and have interests in the same subject content that's mostly metaphysical & mystical in nature.

Which leads me to the post that you are reading, Socrates made a post in which he talked about "dropping the label"...like straight magic, mentalism, comedy magic, twilight zone magic, stage magic, cards, coins & what have you.

I think we as Mystery Performers are too quick to label what we do as mentalism, or rope magic etc. And we tend to stay in that box so to speak. But when you drop the label, then anything is fair game, then your at play with anything, look at the Saturday session this past Saturday when one guy did a thing with two glasses and a book and some silk, while he was doing the trick I was thinking about doing a "mind over matter' presentation with his props. And it would have worked lol.

When you drop the label..you open yourself to many, many possibilities. I have also found that I already have enough tricks to do any type of show and I can mix & match so to speak. I also have enough scripts for patter that I need too. I don't need to keep buying new stuff (but getting new stuff can be very fun), if  you know what I mean.

Thanks again for all your help!!!!!!!! Socrates*

Rick-

It’s true. At some point you don’t need more magic, you need more audiences.

I know not many of you guys and gals do kidshows, but that was my bread and butter for many years.  Especially educational school shows.  A market which has been ruined by too many unqualified magicians trying to sell shows to schools which do not contain any educational substance.  Hence it became difficult to book myself as a magician.

So I found a way to re-label myself, which really benefited my sales pitches.  Since my educational magic programs involved colorful props, backdrops and custom original music, I felt justified in describing my show as a “Theatrical Experience”, and labeling myself as a “Children’s Entertainment Specialist”.

And I’m happy to report that this re-labeling put me in a different category from just another “ordinary” magic show.  It really worked!

Looking at my post I wanted to add this quote as I feel it will help a fellow magi;

" Let go of the oars.."

What happens when you do that? You'll start to drift downstream, going downstream is an easy ride. You don't have to fight the current by going upstream..that is the wrong direction.

What is downstream for you?

PS: Good for you Arthur!!!!!!!!!!! I started out doing kid shows & doing the local magic clubs too.
