Dr Gustav Kuhn is a reader in Psychology at Goldsmiths, University of London. He is also a magician, who was a student of Jim Cellini and member of the Magic Circle.

This fascinating hard-back book of 276 pages examines the psychological principles that take advantage of the blind spots of our conscious experience, ie. where we TMFers, do our best work.

Gustav explores recent developments in scientific study of attention, memory, perception and belief and their application in magical performance and presentation.

He presents evidence from the world of behavioural science, psychology, child development, mathematical and statistical theory and mixes this beautifully with the work of leading magic theorists, in particular Darwin Ortiz, Tommy Wonder, Teller and Robert-Houdin.

Of, Experiencing the Impossible, Tom Stone wrote

“Previous attempts to scientifically examine the principles of conjuring have all suffered from a shallow understanding of science, magic, or both. But here, for the first time, a researcher with deep knowledge of both science and magic shares his findings with the world. Within twenty pages, I, a professional conjurer, felt that my grasp of my own field became noticeably richer.”

Highly recommended.

Two most fascinating chapters for me Chapter 6, Memory Illusions, and the final chapter, chapter 10, How to advance the magic endeavour. Congratulations Dr Kuhn.

I still haven't read this yet.  I bought it (even got a great sale price), just haven't made time to read it.

It was mentioned/recommended in this thread of Favorite Books on Magic Theory https://www.themagiciansforum.com/post/your-favorite-books-on-magic-theory-8346856?trail=100&highlight=experiencing+impossible#83

I will have to prioritize this (among the many other priorities).

Thanks for your input and this reminder.

Hi AV

Fell into the ‘too dismissive of the search function’ trap. I’m happy for you to meld this thread into yours, makes more sense. I agree reading this along side The Magic Rainbow is a total trip!
