Well done Johnny!  The moment you produced that blank card with a reason for joining the forum I immediately thought it was very creative, clever and a sure winner.  Thanks Rudy for offering this contest, it was really fun.

Awesome job Johnny!

Thanks to Rudy for organizing the contest, it was really good to have the opportunity to showcase the stuff.  Is it okay if I share some of the submissions on my facebook page?

Hello Rudy and Forum members!  I just woke up this morning and read the results of the contest!  I am VERY HUMBLED to be considered a winner among so many talented and creative people!  I want to give HIGH PRAISE to everyone who participated not only in this contest (with OUTSTANDING examples of magic) but to all of you for sharing brilliant thoughts with others and ALWAYS in a truly friendly and positive manner!  As for me, I know how FLAWED my performance was (ouch!) -- apparently the road to mastery is "always under construction" -- I realize (sometimes painfully) that I have a lot to learn (magic is a very underrated art form).  I want to thank RUDY and WATERMAN for taking the time to produce and judge the contest, and GARETH for suggesting the idea.  Perhaps MOST importantly for me (and I'm sure others, too), is that the entire effort proved to be an invaluable learning experience, and I know our quest for improving our magic is ultimately why we are all TMF members.  Perhaps the biggest compliment I can give to ALL OF YOU is that, as an amateur and relative "newbie" to magic, I would never have had the nerve to submit an entry if YOU didn't make me feel comfortable and welcomed here. THANKS AGAIN TO EVERYONE! -- johnny

Great job Johnny! Fantastic routine.

Also, hats off to the other contributors as well. Great job all around.

In "Dead Poet's Society" Robin Williams comments that athletic competition is a way use other people to make ourselves better. What a great way to view competitions in general. The goal isn't to beat the others or to win. It's to become better as a result of being in competition. I can sense in the responses of the contestants that this is the spirit underlying this particular competition.

Bravo! And kudos to all who took up the challenge to become better at our craft.

It was an honor to have Rudy ask me to help judge the contest...it was also one of the most challenging "magic related" tasks I have ever been involved with. Each contestant was obviously invested in submitting a contest worthy submission. Every time we reviewed a performance it became more and more difficult to narrow down who would end up in the top three.

It didn't take either of us long to determine that all the contestants be recognized with some type of "prize". We discussed a few ideas last night and hopefully before the Steve Dobson lecture this Saturday we can notify the contestants and inform them of what they will receive for their wonderful contributions.

Magic is a performance art. It's one thing to discuss the many theories and ideas on how effects should be performed. Countless hours can be spent on learning complex moves and effects. Endless debates have gone back and forth regarding how magic should be done and what books to read/DVDs to watch to learn "how to do it". However, it's when these theories, ideas and moves are actually shared with others in an actual performance is what makes magic most appealing to me.

I am thankful to those who stepped up to submit their entries to the contest and for Rudy who has united us all in this very special community. My love for the art is magnified just about every time I log onto the Magicians Forum and I look forward to future discussions and performances from our members.

Excellent post. I especially like were you say "Magic is a performance art..."
&
"...when these theories, ideas and moves are actually shared with others in an actual performance is what makes magic most appealing to me."

I couln't agree with you more. Well-put.

It's a testimony to the character of this Forum that there was no sniping, or other silliness, toward the winner(s).

If I haven't posted it before, it's great to be here.

I'm so glad that you like it, bro.

Dan and I aren't made of money, but we did the best we could to make sure that each one of you received something that would at least put a smile on your face and communicate our gratitude.

I'm so proud and pleased with the community that we've all built together.

Thanks for being a part of it!

Rudy

Rudy, thank you so much. Too generous. You are indeed a rare breed. I hope one day I can get over to the US and share a drink. It won't be in the near future but I hope one day we meet.
