Hi guys....

About me...

I am a Scorpio and I like walks in the park, ginger snap cookies with warm milk and kittens.

The main things I think you folks would be interested in knowing about me is that I am ...

a) First and foremost ...  a joker.  Laughter is therapy! One of my pet projects is straight out of a cartoon ...  A top hat that will hit me in the face with a pie.  Yes, I do have a prototype in the works.

b) A NGH certified Hypnotherapist.  I went and got my cert b/c I was tired of people telling me I wasn't qualified to talk or teach about hypnosis.  This in spite of the fact that I have been using it for years to overcome various serious medical "handicaps"... Milton Erikson was a huge hero of mine growing up, as he, himself, overcame polio using using hypnotic techniques.  My most impressive and massively stupid stunt is where I broke my good leg's femur in four places and then had to ride my pedal bike back a couple of miles to get help. The doctors freaked out when I "tranced" out while they drilled through my leg without the use of drugs to set me up for traction.

I am fairly knowledgeable in both NLP and Hypnosis ...  I rarely tell anyone that anymore b/c you will catch so much crap for it. That said...  It is a lot of fun to use and incorporate into what ever the hell you are doing. In short I am a BIG believer in it - just don't tell anyone for pete's sake.

c) A rising star as a prop builder.  I have dreams of becoming a magi but so far I have found far more satisfaction in building props. I have built many (most?) of the classics from scratch and put my own twist on them. At the time I didn't have the money to buy them ... Now, I do it as therapy of sorts and I am ALWAYS looking for ideas.

of minor interest I am also ...

d) A fairly capable locksmith. I have opened my car more times then I care to admit using the wire torn out of its windshield wipers.  I also used the same trick to get out of handcuffs ...  As I recall the cops were not amused at all. My first love of magic was Houdini and his escapes but alas I am not nearly flexible enough to be an escape artist.

e) Martial Artist and budding survivalist. I have taken numerous martial arts as therapy for my leg. I am no Bruce Lee but I have surprised more then one bully and a mugger! The psychology of magic and mentalism play well with martial arts tactics.

f) An avid Black Jack player. Pull one decent trick in a casino and then watch as security follows you everywhere.  Hilarious...  And they NEVER forget.

I love cards, classic magic and mentalism...   any and all discussion of such will get my attention.

Hey, and welcome,

Glad to have you here. The psychology of magic is a passion of mine. Do you have any favorite books on the subject? One of the best, even though it's not technically magic-related, is Kahneman's Thinking Fast and Slow. A brilliant look at the mechanics of the mind.

Lately I have been asking new arrivals how they found us among the many magic forums on the interwebs. If you don't mind, how did you stumble across our fair little forum?

RE: Found Forum

In the past I teamed up with the guys on exomagic. Sadly it died a horrible death. I think it is still on life support but there is no-one to interact with there.
I wanted to get back into magic so I started hunting down forums and came across yours.

RE: Psychology of magic (and martial arts)

The only books I know of are The Fitzke Trilogy. I don't remember the specifics all that well. The thing to remember is everyone and everything good or bad has something to offer and learn from. One of my favorite magical quotes is "look at the world and everything in it like it is a magic trick ...  without instructions" IE you have to pick it up and figure it out. One of the biggest things about martial arts specifically is that it teaches economy of motion. How to be effective with your body mechanics - everything has a purpose, there can be no wasted motion or you will get tagged. At the same time there are no short cuts - an incomplete motion IS ineffective and therefore wasted motion. There also seems to be a tendency to make things harder then they need to be, internally and externally. Relax and enjoy the process.   BTW my teacher says "I suck at it"....you will never know how hard I worked to get to "sucked". I am not an athlete in anyway shape or form - the opposite in fact. I can defend myself against an average joe - but anyone who has studied much of anything (and willing to take some punishment) will likely mop the floor with me due to my "trick" leg.

Here is a tangent thought.   NLP is largely crap in my opinion... not that the techniques don't work but they forgot the basic premise of hypnosis... "You go first"

Meaning you hypnotize yourself and then invite others in to that thought form. That is the real secret. Should you keep that in mind most of the NLP stuff will work to some degree and it is easy to apply to your basic magic routine as it is largely just a matter of "coding" if you will your patter.

Quick example....

Rather then say:
"Would you do me a favor, and pick a card"
Try
"Why don't you do us a favor and pick a card."

what is the diff?

You and me is exclusive conscious thinking... it sees it self as separate A PART FROM the world around it.  The base foundation of the end thought and magic effect in subject's mind is neutral at best, and competitive and combative in the worst case ...

"I manipulated / moved you".
{I am the primary subject and YOU are secondary... how does that make you feel?}

US is inclusive sub-c thinking... it sees itself as A PART OF the world.  The closer you can align your thoughts with theirs the better your cumulative "rapport". The end thought here is compative and coordinated. In effect they become your secret and willing "stooge"*. < Stooge is a terrible word, in that few endeavor to be one, but it conveys the idea concisely.

"You move me"
{You are the primary subject and I am the secondary... Again.  How does that make YOU feel?}

In summery:

The conscious works with the logical meaning and physical definition; the "body" if you will

The sub-conscious deals with the airy connotation or feeling of the word; the spirit or emotional aspect.

A stupidly simple difference with big results. To me IT is profound and biblical. Ok. Maybe I overstated it... then again... I, myself, don't think so.

NLP is a treasure trove of info - just keep your end motivation in mind. BETTER YET drop it focus on your subject audience's motivation and well being.

Sorry to be so verbose (typical!) things got away from me. lol
