Or is it in public domain?  The issue I am interested in was 100 years ago: March 1920 Vol 7 No.4 P.81.  Lybrary.com wants $10 for it.. doesn't seem right.  Should be free?

It should be in the public domain. Copyrights follow the laws that were on the books when the book was published. I think the new copyright laws are the life of the Author + 70 years, but any work published before 1924 was in the public domain as of 2019.

This does seem to be in the public domain now, but the scan I found on Google Books that should contain the issue you're looking for skips right over it, going from January to April of 1920:

Some of this magic stuff is obscure enough and geared toward a limited enough audience that simply being in the public domain doesn't mean anyone will have bothered to make it available in a complete, convenient digital form for free. It could be that Lybrary (purchase) or the Ask Alexander database at Conjuring Arts (subscription) are your best bets.

As I'm sure you know -- even if something is in the public domain, there has to be a medium for you to receive it... so a lot of eBooks are out there that don't cost a lot because all you're paying for is the reformatting and getting it to you.

Think about all the copies of Erdnase … I've got at least one, possibly more that are bound... and lots of places you can get an eBook free from time to time. Chris at Lybrary has it for $5 -- I wouldn't expect him to have it free, and if you don't have it already, $5 is a good deal.
