After the NDO ending JohnnyNewYork did yesterday, I once again thought back to an effect I witnessed a LONG time ago when I belonged to the local Ring.

They didn't have anyone that was setup to do a discussion (which was usual for those guys), and they asked one of the local pros if he could do something later. He borrowed a deck from someone and then later he gave his presentation.

There weren't that many of us (which was also the usual), and he had us all gather around the table as if it were a poker table. He then shuffled/cut the deck and started telling a story with the cards. I don't remember what the story was about, but it included lots of the elements of all other story deck effects -- lots of shuffles/cuts and humor -- I think I'd remember if it was "Sam the Bellop". I don't remember the story because the ending eclipsed anything he did up to that point. I don't remember if he did any shuffles or cuts after the story -- I think I'd remember if he did a LOT of manipulation, but what I do remember is that he spread the cards face up and they were in New Deck Order.

Any ideas on what the heck that may have been?  -- I don't believe I've asked about this before on TMF... if I have, sorry about that -- I'm old!

Dave, here's a thread fom another forum dealing with story deck tricks. Don't know that it will help, but it might jog someone's memory.

I've seen Simon Lovell do a Sam The Bellhop style routine from a borrowed shuffled deck. He's quick enough to just make it up on the fly!

Denis Behr's Archive has a long list of New Deck Order routines and quite a few Story Deck routines ... but they don't overlap.

thanks for the responses ...

Ray I looked at that Magic Cafe link -- some of those I have, some who knows ... but that was a couple large lists!

Robin -- thanks for seeing if there was any crossover on those links

Just a thought ... could it have been a deck switch?

Simon also had his own Lily Long Legs, but not a new deck thing.

If not a deck switch:

It occurs to me that it would be possible to write a story deck script for whatever the arrangement of cards is in a deck that's 2 or 3 faros from NDO.

Interesting idea!  I wonder if anyone has written a story to fit Mnemonica or Aronson etc.  Then the deck itself becomes the mnemonic for the story.

Mnemonica already has two stories built in. Each used half the stack. A quick glance shows them on p.189. I don't remember much else as I wasn't personally crazy about them. Perhaps I will take another look tonight when I have more time.

Interesting Robin... all these years that didn't cross my mind.

When he asked to borrow a deck, I assumed it was for the demo... maybe he already had one and was borrowing a deck to switch in at the end.

Yes ... ask to borrow a deck at a magic meeting and the odds are pretty good you'll get Bikes.  Given a few minutes you can stack the borrowed deck as you like - NDO is particularly easy.  With two prepared decks of your own (Red back and Blue back) you can start with your own deck, then switch it for the borrowed (and now stacked) deck, finish with a miracle and then hand the deck back to its owner.

If the deck you borrow isn't a match for either of the ones you have prepared ... do something else.

Patrick Redford details 3 story effects in "Temporarily out of Order". One is straight from the stack, the other two are setup by faros from the stack.

I'm not in love with the "R" rating of any of the three.
