Hi Everyone,

Trini Montes brought an idea to me that I'd love for some of you to consider.

Here's Trini: "What I would like to do is to ask members for contributions to submit to the Linking Ring for a Parade. Normally they publish One-Man Parades, but they have also publish Parades from single Rings, or regions. I think we can submit a The Magicians Forum Parade. It would promote the forum in a positive light which can bring more members, as well as show the world who we are."

What a great idea! We have so many creative and talented magicians here at the Magician's Forum.

If you're interested in this idea, please submit an effect to Trini or I through private message or you can just email me directly at themagiciansforum@gmail.com.

We'll pick the best ones and see if we can get them published in the Linking Ring!

Rudy

I love the idea!

Now I need to go through my notebooks.

Just cards?  Or coins?  Or ropes?  Or basically open?

Thanks Rudy and Trini

I agree - wonderful idea!  There are so many creative people here - I can't wait to see the collection of effects.  (And yes, I have submitted one of mine.)

It IS an awesome idea! Mike Powers and I write monthly columns for The Linking Ring and have a good relationship with the Editor Sammy Smith.

We could certainly put in a good word to help this project along!

Great idea. We certainly have the talent on this site to rock a Parade. How many tricks could the project accommodate? How many pages, generally, does a parade run? I haven't been a member for years, so I am sure things have changed a great deal. I'm not magically creative enough to contribute a trick, but I am happy to assist with proofreading and editing. He who stands and punctuates also serves, right?!

Someone should contact Sammy Smith to get a timeline.  I suspect they have the monthly Parades planned well in advance - it might be quite a while before they can slot us in.

Email sent. Fingers crossed!

To respond to an earlier question, all types of magic and venues should be considered. Think beyond cards (though great card effects are always welcome), consider coins, rope, mentalism, chop cup... anything that is amazing! Close up, parlor and stage are all welcome. Structure is typically the starboard Effect, Set-up, Secret/performance. Because many effects are bundled into the Parade section, the writing for each effect needs to be terse and to the point; typically, half a magazine page.
If we get a “go”, I will circulate specific details as soon as I get them.

If pictures or illustrations are needed, how should those be handled? Should we try to sketch them or take a picture, and somebody from the Linking Ring will sketch them?

I don’t know how Mike Powers handles this, but I take pictures and send along with my column. The amazing Tony Dunn takes it from there.

What a cool idea.

I'll dig something out of my notes in case it can be of any use.

As details firm up, it would be good to know of any rough (or firm) deadlines for submitting.

Just looked at the May 2019 Hocus Pocus Parade. It's from "The Pentacle Club Centenary Parade." It was compiled by Chris Wardle, edited by Rose Cardenas and illustrated by Tony Dunn. The intro says, "This Parade is comprised of a selection of effects from members past and present to celebrate one hundred years of The Pentacle Club (Cambridge, United Kingdom). Many members over the years have also been I.B.M. members, and we are very proud of our association and links with this worldwide society."

We'll have to find out from Sammy whether or not they require that the contributions come mostly from IBM members. It appears that in the case alluded to above, not all contributions were from IBM members.

Maybe it's enough if IBM members gather and "compile" the parade. I think that Mike B is checking with Sammy in this regard.

Hi everybody. I just heard back from Sammy Smith and we got a green light for this project!

I will put a couple of Parades together and make them available so you can see the style and format.

The word count for a typical Parade is 10,000 words.

On average, there are around 10 entries per Parade. That’s about 1000 words per entry.
The items could be tricks, performance suggestions, moves and tips. And the tricks run the gamut from close up to stage. Be creative and economical with your writing. If you absolutely need something illustrated, attach a photo and make sure it is labeled appropriately (“figure 1”, etc)

Sammy also said if we had enough material to go an additional 10,000 words, he’d be happy to have a “Part Two”

As to timing, I told him we’d try to get something to him by mid-September. I don’t know what sort of backlog there is, so I don’t know when it would be published. If we get it to him by mid-Sept, my guess would be November.

Rudy, it looks like you have already put out the call to the group for good effects. Maybe Harry could provide us with something too! I’d be happy to work with the team to edit and help stitch this thing together. Mike P, perhaps you’d like to help edit and stitch too???
(Rudy, I’ll PM later with some thoughts on this).

These are major pieces in the magazine, so we should put our best foot forward!
I’m convinced the TMF Parade will be one of the best!!

Awesome!  So after we write something up, who should we send it to for compiling?
And who will make the final call on what's included (part 1, 2, 3...)?

Rudy and Trini had already so graciously suggested material be sent to them (see an earlier post).

Right now the only criteria for inclusion is strong and do-able magic! I would only include a card effect if you think it is original and very strong. Mike Powers “Card Corner” column appears every month and has some of the best, un-toppable Card Magic you could ever hope for! Maybe it will be first come, first served? But we also have to be cognizant of clarity in writing and fit.

Will those whose contribution appears in the Linking Ring parade issue but who are not a member of the IBM, receive a physical or digital copy of that particular issue?

This is very exciting!  There’s nothing like a real project (and a deadline) to get the creative juices flowing!

That said, I’m sadly going to bow out of contributing something, since most of my original effects are reliant on performing to custom music (which cannot be conveyed on the printed page).

This is shaping up in a way that is exceeding my expectations!

So far, I've got items that have (or will be) contributed byHarry, Paul Gordon, Mike Powers, John Carey, Ferry Gerats, Steve Friedberg, Robin Dawes, Tom Kracker, Chris Wilcox and Dave Jelinek.
Keep them coming!!

Hey TMF,
I just got back from Vegas last night which is why I haven't responded for a while. It's great to see this thread/idea come to fruition. I too will be contributing an effect.

So regarding the question if it has to be card magic....
Although many items published in the parades are card tricks, it certainly does not have to be cards. Any and all genres are welcome.

Thank you all for your support and contributions. This will definitely put TMF on the map.

Hi Everybody!

Just wanted to give you a quick update. We have started editing the TMF-Parade. We have some amazing continuations from many of you. There is a lot of tidying up to do, but we will circulate this (vis the Session Room) when complete. It should be soon!

Thanks again to all the contributors!

I wonder if it is too late to contribute...

Hey, Paco. Last update from Michael was that the Parade was running early next year, so yes, for this one it's too late. That said, if it's a success perhaps there will be more opportunities later!

Ok, I give. What do you mean by a parade? And will there be Shriners there in their little cars? I love those things.

The Linking Ring has a special magic section usually written by a single magician or an IBM Ring. This section ( “The Parade” ) will be TMF’d in February!
We got 10 great tricks from forum members! And they are great ones!

Hi Chris.
The process is not a short one (but not too long!). The call went out early in the summer. We figured about ten tricks 1000 words long would work. The first workable set of ten that came through would be the ones for this first go round. All the tricks went though a few rounds of editing, proofing etc. then it was all passed together and a final edit was done to make sure the styles were consistent. Then it was sent to the Linking Ring editors to get the illustrations done and finalize any changes. The authors had a chance to review/amend along the way.

In January, we could start to think about doing a part two. Or wait until June and follow the same schedule we had this year. The Linking Ring editor has expressed interest in us doing this again!

Chris, if you’ve got an awesome trick that you want to see in print sooner, you could always send it to me or Mike Powers (Mike, hope it is OK to solicit without asking you first!!!). I won’t speak for Mike, but I am always looking for good self working magic. (Non cards, please)
