I do one effect that involves using magician's wax and cards.  (The effect is Sankey's Terra Unfirma.)

To prepare, I took a card, cut out the center portion (in an odd shape -- but that's not important), and stuck some wax to the "face" side of this piece.

Now during the trick, I openly take the piece and stick it to the face of a selected card.

That all works fine but later when I remove the piece from the selected card, I'd like the wax to stick to the piece and not stick to the selected card!  Am I asking the impossible?  Sankey seems to imply that this shouldn't be an issue.

I don't know with wax, but with sticky double tape there is no problem.
You can stick a very little piece at the object where it is meant to stay on.
The sticky side that is now viisible and that must adhere to another object, you can make a little less sticky by putting a few times your finger on it.
When you seperate the two objects, the sticky tape will always stay on where it was meant to be.

(sorry if it's not clearly explained. English is not my mother language)

Aha, great idea.  Thanks Maigret!  I'll experiment with double sided tape instead.

STC, there's better stuff now over wax.  Think Blue Tack, Zig glue stick, repositionable glue sticks, etc.

Cool!  I had never heard of these before, but I think Zig glue is what I need.  It looks like I can use in on the card piece and then let it dry.  At that point, it'll still be sticky, but it'll only stick to new things temporarily.

It amazes me what people come up with...

Hello, so as far as the wax sticking to the backside of your card there isn't a whole lot you can do about that, other than the double sided tape which is what I typically use myself. However with some brands of wax the more you roll the wax between your fingers the stickier it gets so if you use a very very very small amount and don't roll it to much you'll be a little better off. Also whatever brand of ask they use on "The Boss Reel" to keep the thread from going inside the reel actually works better on cards than what you typically buy I just don't know if you can buy the same kind they use on it. Hope this is helpful
