i have tried but have never been able to do a mercury card fold. i want to, and i  have practiced. just can't get it.

So i require help. And as it happens, there are lots of magicians here! Magicians who enjoy helping others. i won't say magicians helping magicians. Too green. But i have the mercury card fold blues.

I don't do it myself, Mike, so am unable to feel your folding pain. One consideration: Mercury isn't the only fold out there. Have you looked into Bannon's Creased Lightening? I think it's in Impossibilia, but if not it's in Smoke and Mirrors. I have been told by a couple of others that it's easier to master than Mercury, but again, I can't say from personal experience.

Best of luck!

Simon Lovell also had a fold.   You can lightly score a card (of course someone sells a "thing") but now you have to force a card.

You are correct, Anthony, it's in Impossibilia. There is also an updated handling in one of his later publications, although I'm only familiar with the handling in Impossibilia.

It has the advantage of the last fold placing the card straight into finger palm, without any adjustments.

Don't struggle! There are dozens of published card folds. Some in hand, some under the deck or behind a fan, etc. Find one that works for you.

Do you have Tommy Wonder's books? He has a fold into eighths that takes 2 seconds and happens while handling the deck. Some end up in fourths, some sixths, etc. Does your effect require a specific size?

Mercury is great, but was published in 1939. Lots of work's been done since then. Don't get bogged down.

Jay Sankey also explains the fold, with variations, in his Paperclipped DVD.

You can also just hold the deck behind your back and fold the selected card while talking to the spectators.  It’s bold, but I’ve seen at least one well-known magician fool people with it!

Magik Balay taught me a great variation. He uses this now instead of the MCF

After the card is replaced in the deck and controlled to top or bottom. Say “I am going to do the impossible and find your card without looking at the deck. You put the cards behind your back and do the fold!!!! It takes seconds to do this. And it ends up being a good, even fold!

Then bring the deck back around front , folded card is now palmed. You laugh saying something like “yeah, that would have been a good trick....”

And then you proceed with whatever MCF trick you have in mind

It’s not the Mercury card fold. Behind the back it’s more of a Uranus card fold

Hey Mike, that's the thing I mentioned earlier.  (And Magick is the fellow who showed it to me, too).

Using the behind the back ploy. You can get into it by first turning your back on the spectator and ask him to hand you the deck so you cant see the cards to do any funny stuff. Then turn to face the audience still with the deck behind your back while you do the fold.
