(I created a new topic to show the Emerson & West packet tricks that I own)

To start this topic, I have my favorite, Jim temple's COLOR MONTE. As I already told you in another topic, I met Mr. Emerson in 97 at the TAOM Convention in Fort Worth and I bought 2 sets of this effect and asked him to autograph one of them. On the picture you can see his signature, which I am very proud to have.

ColorMonteJimTemple.JPG

I started in MAGIC watching a magician on Mexican TV, Mishell Mishell, and I wanted to do all the things he did. I was and still am fascinated by magic. I was never able to meet him in person (he died a few years ago) and the next best thing was to meet and know his son. A few years ago he told me that he was selling some of his magic and I immediately took the chance and bought a few of his packet tricks. I see this as a way to be close to my magical hero, by owning some of his magic. In the following posts I will be showing you these packet tricks...

And here is the add for the effect, found on Magicpedia:

I don't recall the effect of The Four Card trick, can you describe it please?

Art Emerson was kind enough to write the introduction to my second  book on packet tricks called "Still Small, Still Deadly".

Sure Paul, but I will copy the description from the instruction sheet:

The Four card trick effect:

Performer shows a small plastic wallet, saying he is going to do a trick with four cards. He opens wallet, removes four cards with a numeral on each: a one, a two, a three, a four. Performer places them in a row face up on table and has spectator name a number. Performer picks cards up, turns them face down and magically changes the color of the back of the freely chosen number, for instance, from red to blue. Then one by one, he changes the color of the backs of the other three numbers to match the back of the selected one (in our example, from all red to all blue.)

Now spectator chooses another number and magician shows the backs of the other three cards are all the same, for instance, blue; while the selected number is the opposite color, red. Performer now opens wallet, which has been in view all through the trick, and removes another set of 1, 2, 3, 4. He shows that they are the red backed ones except for one blue. when the card is turned over, it is the same selected number.

Magician gives one set of 1, 2, 3, 4 to spectator and he takes the other set. Magician mixes his cards and places them face down in a row on the table. Spectator does same. When cards are shown, magician's cards are the same order as the spectator's. As a finale, performer takes the two packets together face down, saying, "All we use is eight cards." When he deals them face up the numbers on the cards are now 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8. Everything can be examined.

And another one of my favorite effects... Ed Hollins' Flipped Out. I could not find the instruction sheet, just the Q-Card. I put the original cards away a long time ago and made my own set of cards on Bicycle stock.

Definitely a trip down memory lane for me. During my youth, I demoed at two different magic shops. I think I sold about 100 or more Color Monte's. Many of the tricks above are a flashback to a very fun time in my life. Thank you for sharing.

The last pic of Sympathetic Cards.
I remember those backs so well. Those cards were horrible.
Was that a particular brand of cards or was that an exclusive to Emerson and West?
Anyone know the story behind those cards?

Those particular cards are not so bad, they slide ok with Elmsley counts and other counts. They still feel like cardboard and not playing cards. And no, I don't know their story...

Great nostalgia with all of those Emerson & West packet tricks. Color Monte is still something I do ALL THE TIME. I don't recognize many of the others you posted, but I would love to see them demonstrated. The packet tricks I recall from back then were...

Pointer
Gypsy Curse (Peter Kane)
Time Out
Spot the Dot
Quadrophonic
Wild Card

I don't recall which of these -- if any -- were Emerson & West.

There was also a gaffed Twisting the Aces. (It wasn't until adulthood some 15 years later that I realized there was an un-gaffed Twisting the Aces by someone named Dai Vernon!)
