Hello, my name is Nate Smith. I’ve been learning magic for a little over a year and would consider myself a hobbyist at this point. But, I recently began producing and hosting a new magic show in Portland, OR, (hope this doesn’t count against me as promoting) and plan on having Rudy on my show in August.

I have been a comedian for 19 years and perform mostly improv comedy but also have extensive experience in stand up and sketch comedy as well as hosting shows.

I look forward to utilizing this forum as I grow my knowledge of magic.

The successful marriage of comedy and magic is not as easy as it might seem. Usually one or the other suffers. Mac King is one of the finest examples of the perfect blend. Good luck with your new endeavor! Welcome to the forum. We can learn a lot from your wealth of experience.

Your experience in front of an audience and now on television/radio (I didn't know which?) will be invaluable, in your magic endeavors. Nothing and I mean nothing equals, what you learn from the general public.

Enjoy your time here and remember that all manner of person are on boards like these. amateur, professional, hobbyist, the curious and the serious. Advice comes in many forms and should be filtered, with that in mind.

Good luck with your show and finding what you need here on, The Magician's forum 😉

Thanks!

I have to say how weird it is to have my confidence almost completely reset. After 19 years of performing unscripted comedy, I can do a show in front of 800 people without any nerves. But if I try a card trick for a couple 9-year-olds I get super nervous.

But I’m getting better and I think it is good for me to be so far outside of my comfort zone.

Welcome, Nate.

I am, I think, showing great restraint in resisting the urge to welcome you in a manner that suggests we've already met in some other improbable context that you would then have to play along with and build upon.

Enjoy the site and let's learn from each other.

Welcome Nate, you'll have to let me know where you're performing.  I have a friend that lives in Vancouver WA looking to see magic.  He's not a magician, but loves magic.

I myself do not perform magic, but my show that I produce and host is A Night of Curiosities. The next show is on July 30 but is already sold out. The next show is going to be on August 20. Your friend can sign up for our mailing list at http://www.NightOfCuriosities.com to get advanced notice of when those tickets go on sale.

I perform improv comedy several times a week at the Curious Comedy Theater http://www.curiouscomedy.org

Here's a shout out for Nate. I've seen him perform improv at Curious Comedy many times. He's really good. And he's a really nice person.

And now I have more show tickets to buy...

Hi Nate,

Welcome!

I have some improv training under my belt, and my son performs in improv shows regularly. Lately, he has been doing some open mic stand-up to hone his writing skills.
Sounds like your show is doing great!

That’s great Don! Where have you trained/performed improv? Where does your son perform?

So far the show has sold out it’s first 2 shows (60 seats). The real test is if we can continue selling out after we have cycled through the friends and family and local magic enthusiasts.

There's a club in the Chicago suburbs called The Comedy Shrine. Really cool place. My son is planning on picking up some training in the city in the near future. As I'm sure you know, Chicago has a great variety of improv styles and training opportunities, so it will be interesting to see how he continues to grow as a performer.

Best of luck! I hope you have continued success with your shows!

Yes, Chicago is the birthplace of American improvisation. I was just there last summer performing in a festival at iO.
