I am looking for a good newspaper headline effect. There is one in Mind, Myth & Magick by TA Waters & Richard Osterlind's Easy To Master Mental Miracles dvd called Koran's Headline Prediction.

The simpler - the better. What can you recommend ? I do favor the Koran routine but I want to know who's version you like and where can I find it.

Everybody have a merry christmas!

One of the best I have seen performed is also called "Koran's Headline Prediction" but it is not the same as the one on the (excellent) Osterlind DVD you mention.

The one I am thinking of was apparently never put in print by Koran himself, but Alan Shaxon popularized it with Koran's name attached.  It's in the book "Alan Shaxon - The Sophisticated Sorcerer", and you can also purchase it as a stand-alone.  Here's a link:  http://alanshaxonbook.com/shop/index.html

An old magician, having since passed away did this effect here in Alabama for many years and I used it often to end the shows I did for banquets and corporate events.

His name was Bill Stevenson and the effect was sold by Abbots, I think in the 60's. I think it was called the "Bally Prediction". I never owned the instructions as Bill taught it to me personally.

In it, you send a sealed envelope to the event chairman, CEO or someone of stature coming to the show. At the end of the show, you call him forward to open the sealed envelope for the first time..... he does and while he is doing so, you produce the daily newspaper..... he then removes the letter inside and reads something to the effect of:

"Ladies and Gentlemen - I am writing this note to be read the night of xx/xx/xxxx by my friend Mr. ________ and I have asked him to:

1.  verify the sealed nature of the envelope he has received earlier in the mail....

2.  verify the fact that neither he nor others have tampered with the envelope before now...

3.  verify the newspaper I am holding now is legitimate and bears today date and has not been altered in any way....

As I write this letter, I am sensing that there are some interesting stories that will appear in the near future in the evening/daily paper dealing with current events.

You then List 3-4 headlines being as specific or vague as you wish them to be perceived.

Note: Avoid disaster headlines, sports contest scores and/or lottery numbers.

The closing paragraph should read:  (Modify to company or organization)

Example:

In closing, I can also see and I am confident to reveal that the future of the "____________ Company" is a bright one under the direction of my friend Mr/Ms _____ and that your success is destined to make a difference in your industry for a long time to come.

I can also predict confidently that my show tonight has been an entertaining one for all present and my return next year will only prove to be a bigger hit - especially since my other show is so much better than this one....  (Wait for the Laughter to die down)

Good night and God Bless:

Tommy Ellison

Take the bows and close....

The DL cost $4 and I suspect the low price will keep many magi from taking it serious. I can attest it is a great effect and the best one I know to easily predict the future headlines a week or more in the future.

I just bought it myself and was surprised to see Mr Stevenson's printed methods compared to the ones he told me and what I changed when doing the effect.

************************************************************************************

EXPLANANTION

NEVER REVEAL BEFOREHAND THIS WILL BE NEWSPAPER HEADLINE PREDICTION! JUST CALL IT A PREDICTION OF A FUTURE EVENT AND LEAVE IT AT THAT. You will see why in a minute.....

Rather than mail two envelopes as originally written up, Place the PE in a larger envelope (OE) and mail to the client. Be sure and write "SEALED ENVELOPE" - DO NOT OPEN UNTIL XX/XX/XXXX on the back of this envelope near the flap.

In all likelihood, the client will not open the envelope before the date of the show.

Have the GE in your briefcase along with a Sharpie or Magic Marker... these need to be lying close to you with the lid of the briefcase open but facing toward the client - on other words he cannot see the contents of the briefcase. Have the GE lying in the briefcase where you can easily reach it with no hesitation - maybe stuffed in the case lid organizer if it has one....

On the night of the performance, Find the client and asked if he brought the sealed envelope.... when he produces same act surprised that he has to opened the envelope.... Take the large envelope and open it carefully so as to not tear or damage the small one inside...

Tell him he did a great job protecting the envelope but the one you need to confirm is actually inside..... and i need you to initial it to certify that it has not been opened or tampered with.....

As you hold the PE in one hand, pick up the Sharpie and hand to to the client (I usually wedge the cap on real tight so he has to work a little to remove it and provide a natural distraction for the next second or two.

As he removes the cap, casually reach over to the briefcase and drop the PE and pick up the GE in one fluid motion while closing the lid of the briefcase.... There is no technique here.... just a casual movement that draws no attention to the fact you are switching envelopes.

Close the lid of the briefcase and place the envelope on top and ask him to inspect the envelope to be sure it is sealed and then initial it with the Sharpie. He is to keep the envelope until called forward at the end of the show.

Your done!

In this method, you fool one person to set up the complete astonishment of the many.

THE OUT:

If you get to the gig and discover the envelope may have been tampered with and/or you cannot perform the switch as noted, leave him with the original envelope.

The OUT will be seen as a comedic moment and has a little bit of a kicker in it as well.

That's it!

Use it or loose it!

Tommy

PE  =  "Prediction envelope" is the letter sized envelope with the word prediction written or printed on the outside. Inside this envelope, write these words or something similar that matches your personality:

"In closing, I can also see and I am confident to reveal that the future of the "____________ Company" is a bright one under the direction of my friend MR/Ms _____ and that your success is destined to make a difference in your industry for a long time to come.

I can also predict confidently that my show tonight has been an entertaining one for all of you here, and my return engagement next year will only prove to be a bigger hit - especially since my other show is so much better than this one...."

"By the Way, you chose the (FORCE CARD) or use some type of force prediction that can be revealed as an afterthought...... Maybe the Invisible deck with jumbo Cards or reg deck as you desire.

**********************************************************************

GE  =  "Gaffed Envelope" is the one containing the current headlines that must be swapped for the PE before showtime.

**********************************************************************

OE = "Outer Envelope"  This is the envelope you mail with the the PE inside and sealed with the language noted above on the back of the envelope.

Robin,

Interesting props and effect - thanks for the link.

Tommy,

Thanks for typing that up and sharing with us that method, this is going to be something that I am going to work on, I like the ease of using a briefcase as cover for the " dirty work " lol.

Thanks a lot..

Logan
