This is a very nice packet trick that fools laymen and magicians alike. When I showed it to those present on the video session we had last Sunday here on the Magician's Forum (September 18), I think they liked it and were fooled by it. Then, when I told them it was on Nick Trost's Subtle Card Creations, Vol. 1, several people said they had the book and never saw it, so I guess it is one of those hidden treasures we can find in those books we already have...

Oh, and I forgot to mention that it features "The Diminishing Count" which is not commonly seen in effects...

So I guess the moral of the story is "Check the books you already own, there might be a hidden treasure there that you haven't discovered..."

Happy hunting...

Yes, 'A Packet of Backs' is a lovely little sequence, thanks for finding it.  I notice that there are some alternate handlings for the last part of the diminishing count on p.262-264 of Subtle Card Creations vol I, together with a reference to three other tricks which use the same counting technique (one of which is in the June 1991 issue of 'Apocalypse').

Also, as a slightly different presentation (suggested by my better half), you can start by showing 'all double backers', rub the packet on your sleeve, then show 'all blank', and finally after a suitable magical moment, show 'all the cards as the selection'. (needs the same cards, except substitute one of the 2D with a blank card)
