Hello! Sorry if I could not update the study, Too much work in the university. In this topic, I am going to talk about the basics of the effect. This is the base which I used for the rest of the study.

First of all, I had to decide which is the basic effect. In this case, the effect in the oil and water is "separation" or "bringing order to chaos". from here, we can decide which are the key elements of the routine.

For me, the basic elements are two groups of cards (from now on they will be called X and Y, due to the fact that both have to be different from each other) which are mixed and, after the magic gesture, they separated.

Using this sentence, we can classify the future versions of this routine in:
1) Which are X and Y. The effect is not limited to cards could be coins or other stuff
2) The number of elements. Usually, X and Y have the same number.
3) The difference between X and Y. in the case of the cards could be the face, the back, both or mixing the face and the backs, as happen in the version of the oil and water with 4 cards.
4) How they are mixed. This is more related to the intern part of the trick.
5) How it end. The most difficult and funny part for me. We will see all the different versions that I found.
6) Extra elements: using a vase, a clip, jumbo cards...

This is the basic parts of the investigation and the dissection of the effect, next part will be talking about the history of the effect and some versions.

Do you agree? do you think that are more parts for classify? Have you any thoughts of that? please, share them and we can have a discussion.

Rocco has an effect called salt and pepper or maybe something else. It's a "dry" version of oil and water.

Seen Rocco live a few times but never seen that before, like the presentation.

I believe at one time Jon Racherbaumer was going to write a massive book on the plot.

That routine by Rocco is great - his choreography is so clean.

Im on a never ending quest to rediscover the version of OilAndWater that was included in my Green Stamps magic set. Im pretty sure it used 3 black and 3 red but also the backs were red and blue so as you mixed the red and black suits, the cards were flipped over and the card backs were shown to have seperated. Once again the backs were mixed but when flipped over- the suits were now seperated. Hope that makes sense. You would think people would get it but I remember being really surprised that it fooled everyone I showed it to so I would keep repeating it. Anyway- can not find that version.
Im also working on a version in the hands but it might take another year of practice....😐
