Friday night at The Magic Castle was AWESOME.
Rudy, Steven Christian (Stevie Ray from this forum), Nicolás Pierri, & I got to hang out & watch some amazing magic by excellent magicians.

We got there & started-off at the Close-Up Gallery where Paul Wilson entertained us wonderfully for about half an hour. We sat in the very front row to his left. (He knew we were magicians because that was a question he asked for one of his tricks.) I liked how in the middle of his show he performed Triumph. When he completed this effect, he looked our way & said "there's always time for a classic." He was GREAT. I loved his coins & cork routine.

Next we moved on & went downstairs to a magician doing card & coin tricks at one of the bars. I didn't catch his name but he was really good. He vanished coins beautifully & produced them out of thin air! I really liked that & it fooled me bad.
He also got me on an effect where someone picked a card & signed it, it got lost into the pack, & it was found in a stack of napkins 8 down. Just like the spectator wanted. It was magic.

We had dinner next. The Magic Castle is very elegant & has delicious food. Seriously. Not only did it looked good, but it tasted great. I'm sure we all agree.
We performed magic for each other at the table here. A pleasant experience. Rudy did a trick where he had me remember 2 cards then he revealed them very nicely. Steven worked those coins beautifully & his vanishes & productions were top-notch. And Nico. Wow. He entertained us very well also. He's a master with a deck of cards & coins. In one of his tricks he had me look at a card, I lost it into deck myself, & I dealt down to a number I picked...MY CARD WAS THERE!

We went to a show next at The Palace of Mystery inside The Magic Castle. Tickets are required for this. (Thanks to Rudy for the dinner reservations.)
Murray SawChuck (the resident magic historian on the television show Pawn Stars) & his lovely assistant, plus Douglas "Lefty" Leferovich put on a nice show for us. Murray did great stage magic & is very funny. Lefty is very talented...& a good dancer.

Pop Haydn was downstairs at the W.C. Fields Bar.
He had big crowds & I was happy to be a part of that. Rudy too, I know, since he was looking forward to this. I loved it. Excellent showman & also funny. His 3-Shell Game routine is great.

We left at around midnight. I had alot of fun. Thanks you guys...& thanks to those who were curious enough to read my review/experience. I'll cherish that day forever. 😊

Never forget  my one time visit to the Castle many, many years ago. Stayed for about 2 hours or so but had to leave as I was with someone else who couldn't stay and was driving, but I overheard someone say to bad you have to leave, Dai Vernon should be here soon. My one and only time I could ever meet the him and I missed out. Would of loved to see him.

Thanks for that great review of your Magic Castle visit.  Mentioning Paul Wilson brought back memories for me.  I had to follow HIM in the close-up show at Magic In The Rockies a couple of years ago.  That show also featured John Mendoza, Jason England and Suzanne.  Luckily I had some great routines, which I had rehearsed very well, and in fact some of the attendees told me afterwards it was the first time they had seen a close-up show where every act was at the same high level.

Anyway, I didn’t mean to distract from your Magic Castle visit.  It sounds fantastic!  Would love to have been there!

My time visiting Steve, Nico and Miguel in Southern California was incredible!

In addition to the moments that Miguel described, we were astounded by Miguel's (Cardshark Quixote) unbelievable ability to deal out a full house from a truly shuffled deck. We actually didn't believe that he was using the method that he said that he was! [smile] What a talented (and humble) guy he is!

Another memorable moment for me was when I sat with Howard Hamburg at that table near the bar where Dai Vernon used to always sit. He was showing me all sorts of mind blowing magic. He had me shuffle the deck a few times and then riffled the cards for me to peek at one (he couldn't see the pips, it was my deck, and he didn't hold a break). He then asked for the identity of my card and then proceeded to spell to it! This was done multiple times and he never failed.

This morning, Steve set up a fun meeting with Gregory Wilson! What a nice guy! He made us laugh out loud as he did a fun routine using a poker chip that continued to appear on Nico's shoulder. He also fooled the heck out of me when he solved a Rubik's Cube (that I jumbled up) behind his back. The method is brilliant! When I collect $300, I'm going to buy it!

Nico's lecture was astounding! If you weren't able to watch it, I'd encourage you to get it. You won't be disappointed! A couple of young magician's were there as audience members. They taught me and Nico how to stick a nail in our nose. I probably won't be adding it to my repertoire, but it created a very memorable moment.

Steve and his wife were so kind to let me and Nico stay with them. They are kind and generous people who I'm grateful to count as friends. Thanks for everything, Steve!!

Now that I got that out of my system, I'd love to hear all your memorable stories of the Magic Castle!

Rudy

I'm not sure if there is anything like the Magic Castle on the east coast. I doubt it.
I think that a trip to the castle should be on every magician's bucket list.

Our one time at the Magic Castle was in 2008 when my wife, Colleen, and I were flown out to appear on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno. We were part of a  segment called "Don't Try This At Home."
We were one of three acts in that segment. We taped the segment but due to the way it's taped, each of us saw each other's segment but not our own. The plan was to meet back at the hotel around 11pm and watch ourselves on TV.

Colleen and I decide to go to Universal Citywalk for dinner. We're about to go into a restaurant when we get a call from the two guys in the first act asking us if we wanted to go to the Magic Castle. I had no tie, no jacket, but said yes anyway. Once there they outfitted me with a jacket and tie and off we go following these two guys. We go into the closeup show and Colleen asks me, "How long is the show?" That's because it was almost time for The Tonight Show to air on the east coast and her dad was going to call when he saw us. As it turns out, the show ended,  and Colleen gets the call right as we walked into the hall. "You guys are on TV right now. You guys look great."

So now we're wondering if we're going to get back to the hotel in time to see ourselves on TV, or if we were just going to stay at the Castle as long as we could. We were already planning for the latter. We were still following these two guys around when they head way downstairs. Someone informs us that there's a private party going on. One of the two guys says, "Yeah, we know" and head over to talk to someone. Colleen and I don't know anybody so we hung out against the wall. It turned out we were crashing Bill Larsen Jr's 80th birthday party.

Then four people come up to us and one of them says, "Hey, we saw you two on the Jay Leno show today."

My brain was trying to get a handle on what they just said. Colleen's dad just saw us in NY. We still had a few hours to go before it aired here. The only thing I could fathom was that somehow they watched it on a flight to LA and came to the Magic Castle right after they landed. Somehow time zones filled in any discrepancies. Colleen said, "Really, was it already on TV?" They said that they were appearing at the Castle that week, invited some friends, got tickets to the Leno show taping and that's when they saw us...at the taping. So now everything is cool. They asked if we were going to see the shows tonight. We said that we saw the close-up show but the lines to the other shows were ridiculous. They said don't worry. They got us into every show by taking us to the front of line before people were seated and saying, "They're with us."

It was a cool visit because there's such a unique vibe in the place. There's magic and business going on everywhere. It's a lot to take in. But we were given special treatment, we even got to see the library even though it was closed at the time. We had a good time there. I just don't remember anyone that we saw at the time.

We wound up staying late at the Castle. Got back to the hotel way after the Leno show was over. We flew back to NY and it wasn't until 2 weeks later that we finally got a copy of the clip of us on Leno. And sorry, you can't see it on YouTube. They keep taking it down within minutes after we post it.

Great story EvilDan! Maybe you can post the vid here. Would love to see it!

Don Quixote, It was such a pleasure to hang with you! Your enthusiasm for sleight of hand is surpassed only by your mad skills. You have the most fluid, nimble and convincing second deal I have ever seen! We need to session soon!

Rudy Tinoco, What can I say? and WHAT A VOICE! We had so much fun. I am lining up some brilliant musicians to back you on June 30th. Also, Vinny Marini and John Lovick will be at the Castle that Friday night... so we will charge the L.A. freeway after the gig!

I have had the pleasure of playing host to Nico Pierri these past few days. He is a rare breed... a deep thinker, a skilled technician, a terrific presenter and a well-rounded gentleman who can converse on a wide variety of subjects. He had his first taste of pineapple pizza, The Habit burger and KFC on his California trip. He has been so generous with his ideas. You guys saw a four hour lecture; I feel as though I've been to a six day seminar. I will miss this guy when he heads back to Buenos Aires.

A year and a half ago, I joined the Magician's Forum to learn, research and discuss magic. Little did I know, I would end up making such dear friends. What a treasure this place has become!

Reading this thread brought back so many pleasant/great memories for me. All the time spent with Jennings, Vernon, Ricky Jay and on and on. Always sat at the far left corner where Dai always sat at his special place and we'd talk about "old times." I'd spend the night at the Castle just about every time I was in town to do The Tonight Show. That brings back the memory that I've written about a couple of times...

Johnny Carson and I went out to dinner after the show - and then we were going to spend the night at the Castle. Ready for this?  They wouldn't let Johnny in because he was wearing a t-shirt, no tie!! Nice, expensive, suit but an (expensive) overhead shirt, no tie. That rule changed pretty quickly after that.

Another rule that I think changed pretty quickly was when I went to the Magic Castle with my wife - and they wouldn't let her in 'cause she was wearing a pants suit! (Which I'm sure was worth much, much, more than some of the suits some men were wearing!)

Anyway, just some of my memories - another one was the time I spent with Jay Ose at the Castle when it was being built!  Before it opened. Not sure, but I think Jay worked for them - was one of the watchmen, or something like that. We'd sit and do card stuff on an old plank of wood.

Thanks for sharing Harry.  I've heard that Johnny Carson also knew some magic.  Is this true?  Did he ever show any tricks when you went to the Magic Castle?
