Is that the trick where pull tight the strings to stop the cube, and , to loose the strings to let the cube go back and forth ?

If memory serves, you have to feed some of the string back into the cube. That's all I remember and that may be wrong. Memory.....

I thought that the hole in the cube was cut in such a way that it was a simple matter of letting the string slack a bit when you want the cube to move and pull it taut when the cube is ordered to stop...However, like Mike said, memory...

Like Mike Powers said, I too remember having to feed some of the thread back into the cube.
On the plastic ones I believe there was a specific side that you had to feed it in.
I don't remember if one side was black and the other red, or if there were two black sides that the thread came out of, but one side was gloss black and the other flat black so you knew which side to feed it in.

Yes. Once you feed some of the string back in (exactly how is unknown to me), you can then use the string tension as a way to slow and stop the falling die. It's pretty cool. I think, at the end, you undo the mechanism and no one else can do it.
