Hi Everyone,

I'm excited to announce that our next lecture will be given by Rafael Benatar!!

Rafael is an incredibly talented magician, author, lecturer, and musician.

His international reputation has taken him to over three hundred cities of the world. He is one of the most active members of the Escuela Mágica de Madrid and one of the few magicians that performs regularly in all three rooms of the Magic Castle in Hollywood.

His online lecture will take place next Saturday, December 16th at 2pm (Pacific).

It will be recorded, so if you can't attend the LIVE event you can still watch it via a private YouTube link that you will receive when the lecture is over.

The cost is just $5.99 and you can register here: https://goo.gl/vQwxdq

Rafael is a master with a deck of cards and I trust that we'll learn some excellent magic from him.

I hope to see you all there!

Rudy

Just paid and I can hardly wait for this great lecture! I may not be able to watch it live (I have a family thing that day) but will be watching it later...

This year is ending with a bang!

See you around!

Hi everyone. Looking forward to Saturday's lecture. Lots of things to share. Let's make it interactive. And it's not only about tricks and moves. There is room for magic theory, patter, practice, people, stories, construction, repertoire, communication... Oh, yes, communication.  You'd be able to ask questions live through Rudy (thank you Rudy for doing this) but feel free to get ahead and help me shape the lecture and customize it for you.

I'm hoping to see some of your work on handling doubles. I regularly use the slippery double, even under fire. I wonder if some guys stay away from it because of fear that it will split.
I find that it's incredibly disarming.

Hi Rafael,

Very much looking forward to the lecture. I may not be able to catch the lecture live so I will get my interaction done here. I would love to see you include some non-card material and perhaps your thoughts on act construction.

Hi Rudy
Thank you for your request on the issue of tabling doubles. I'll make a note. The subject deserves a discussion, aside from the purely technical instruction. I have developed a number of moves and handlings over the years, while my thoughts about how and when to use them have evolved. We will discuss which are the ones that I really use and what makes them safe... when they are safe.

Hi Barden. I'll make a note on your request. Thnak yu for bringing this up. The issule of act construction largely depends on where you perform and your personal style, but there are some rules, if you can call them that, that apply to all. We'll bring it up. Thnak you for asking.

I dont use MD much but I practice it and enjoy figuring out the calculations. I'll give some exercises to get sharp at it and get you ready to improvise. Also some general concepts about practice that can be readily applied here.

A theory question, but I'd be interested to hear what your thoughts are on the balance between realistic and fictional magic. Both in a set (when to perform in one or the other style), as well as in a trick (how do you know an effect is best presented as fictional magic?)

Also would be interesting to hear what you've taken away from ascanio regarding creating magic experiences / atmospheres !

I watched the Benatar lecture and what a fabulous man. He really enjoys his magic and has offered so much in this lecture. What a magnificent magician. Thank you so much Rudy for arranging this lecture. It was one of the best I have ever seen, and I have seen alot over the past 20 years. Kudos to you and to Mr. Benatar.

Hi Flourish. Sorry, saw this too late. For me the only realistic magic is gambling demosnstrations and only part of the time and some kinds of mentalisicks with a storym. To me fiction is inbuilt in all magic. If we refer to tricks with or without a story, everything can make sense, depending how you put your act together. If its an act, you better pick one (most of the time). If it's a whole show, you should be able to create different atmospheres with differing artistic realities. The most important lesson from ascanio was attention to detail, motivation, cover, handling to always find the best way to do everything - not only the secret actions or moves.

Thanks Barry! I'm so glad that you enjoyed it.

I loved it too. He fooled the heck out of me more than once. I love that feeling!

I appreciate everyone who attended and those who registered.

I also owe a debt of gratitude to Rafael. He gave us far more than our money's worth. Thank you, Rafael!

I'll post the video soon so that you can review the material that we were taught.

Hello Forum Members!  Once again, I'm a "little late to the races", but I wanted to give a huge thank you to Rafael Benatar, a brilliant magician with great stories, thoughts on the theory of magic, insights regarding the some of the pitfalls of performing, and some truly AWESOME sleights and routines.  He impressed all of us as not only being a very talented performer but a super gentleman as well -- definitely a class act (I felt like I received more than the price of the lecture within the first 5 minutes or so with his "slide double").  The entire lecture felt like a private, informal session, and, as already mentioned, proved to be very interesting and a whole lot of fun.  For me, some of the moves demonstrated will take a little time, but what a gift to have the opportunity to see what IS possible.  I also want to thank Rudy --  he somehow gets the "best in the business" to share their magic and he always makes sure everyone has a voice with questions or whatever.

If some of you missed this lecture, you probably can still purchase access to the video recording, but if you can't, just make sure to attend the next one -- whatever and whenever that will be.  These lectures and sessions are definitely the best bargain in town, and the Forum is still the most positive place online thanks to all of you for keeping it that way.   Have a great holiday and a terrific 2018.  johnny

This lecture was such a pleasure to experience. I especially enjoyed seeing how some of his techniques evolved through a series of very exacting analyses of small elements which added to the whole.

Rudy asked at one point whether the size of his hands contributed to what he was accomplishing. I am not sure that Benetar caught that question. However it was evident that he stretched his fingers and strengthen them in very particular ways. His pinky count was like watching a power lifter who had honed his craft.

When Mr. Benetar reflected on what produced the particular qualities of the Spanish School of Magic suddenly you knew what a great " school" takes...an absolute absorption in performing and perfecting.

This was an effective two plus hour demonstration of that attention to detail, theory and practice.

Amazing in so many ways. It was pure pleasure.  Peace...  Fred  (Reisz)

Hi fredreisz.  I think I did catch the question but might not have answered it completely. My answer was only trying it out with a jumbo deck, which becomes almost a joke. Size of hands counts (as do other things) but it's different for every move. People with large hands also need to be more careful about not covering too much and losing clarity. However, too many people are discouraged to even try something under the excuse of having small hands. My example with the jumbo deck would have been better with a deck that is only slightly larger than a regular one (like those that Phoenix makes). Actually, I should carry one of those to every lecture. I have  spent years doing daily left hand exercises with the guitar and lute. However, the position and grip described transform it into a softer technique. It's not really about strength if you do it that way. Thank you for writing.

MorrisCH,

Try the original link Rudy posted (https://goo.gl/vQwxdq). Although the event is over, it may still take you to paypal where you can then pay and be able to get it.

I hope this helps...
