Did you ever wonder about the title of this routine?

It's borrowed from a novel of the same name, written by Earl Derr Biggers in 1913.  Biggers was a popular novelist and playwright of the time, author of the Charlie Chan mysteries that were later turned into so many questionable movies.  It turns out the character of Charlie Chan (who does not appear in "Seven Keys") was based on a real detective named Chang Apana.

"Seven Keys" was transformed into a successful Broadway play and has been made into a movie at least seven times.  (Source: Wikipedia)

It was a title that everyone would have been familiar with when Annemann adopted it for his seminal mental effect in 1931.

Biggers died in 1933, at the age of 48.   Carpe diem, my friends.

Anyway, the book is a sort of humourous mystery about an author who seeks seclusion in a mountain hotel that is boarded up for the winter ... a trope that Steven King put to good use many years later.  Our hero in "Seven Keys" finds his isolation disturbed by an odd-ball collection of visitors who all seem to be hiding something from him and from each other.  There are gunshots in the night, creaking floorboards, etc.  It's a light bit of fluff, and not a bad choice if you need a break from the cares of the world (don't we all?).

And you can read it for free!  It's part of the collection of royalty-free downloadable ebooks at https://manybooks.net

As always a delightful post.  And informative!  And of course, well researched.    I wasn't aware of Manybooks, and am now immersed in the site to find a new read.  I was going to reorganize my home office today.  THANKS

Thanks for the link, Robin!  And the Seven Keys to Baldplate history lesson.  Fascinating!

I had never heard of Manybooks, but glancing through their site I see they have some wonderful titles.
