I was just wondering about this, I have a friend whom I did a simple anagram effect for, now she thinks I have a "gift" even after I told her it was a trick.

And I was just thinking about guys like Peter Popoff & Jim Jones with the Peoples Temple tragedy a long time ago who used mentalism methods to get their "flock " to believe in them and believe they had "powers"

This is where I side with the Skeptics and I think they should be debunked in the media like that guy James Hydrick who did PK on That's Incredible, a tv show in the 80's.

So, my question to you is, do you believe it's possible to start your own cult or religion using mentalism or magical techniques in the year 2020 ?

Absolutely. Humanity has not changed. Whether this be good or bad, I'll leave you to your conclusion.

I was also going to recommend Derren Brown's work in this area.  His "Messiah" special also covers this very well.

Possible, but not recommended.

Gullible people have been and always will be with us. Have you noticed how copper is being added to product after product to entice folks to buy? I guess some think it has magical powers.

I really hate the fact I can't really participate in this topic though I have much to say about it.
If I start, then it will be essential that I explain my opinion as to why many are seeking answers and why most are on dead end roads.

So I'll leave it at that.

People worship wherever I go. I smile benevolently, sign autographs and keep moving.

Those guys are turds...

You don’t need tricks to start a religion. Charisma and a good line of B.S. go a long way.

I know a few people that started their own churches. I know people who were friends with Anton LaVey before he started his Church of Satan and actually told him he should start his own church.

People want to feel like they matter. People are gullible. People will jump on the band wagon like lemmings. Some people want to be at the forefront of the next big thing- like they discovered it and told everyone else.

My best friend Tommy and I often talked about joining a cult. Not because we felt empty and needed a place where we felt a sense of worth - we just wanted to take over. I’m sure we could have done it too. We had our eye on Scientology then joined the Navy and a lot of drinking derailed those plans.

I’ve heard this before, that once someone believes a magician really has superpowers, even when you show them the deception, they still insist. I wasn’t sure the need to believe was that powerful, but I guess it’s true. It’s not just the religious who can be manipulated either. You probably saw the one where Brown led an atheist to a religious conversion. The scary thing is not so much what people believe (although that can get pretty scary); the scary thing is how easy it is to get people to believe things, and how tenaciously they cling to them.

And like Ray I’m zipping my lip. 🍻🍿

Our belief system shapes our reality. Cults are very interesting to study. John Riggs wrote a great manuscript called 'The Messiah Process' which certainly demonstrates how easy it is to build a following and perhaps manipulate others.

The word cult itself is worth considering too. We have Western culture, and Eastern culture and there lot of differences between the two. Perhaps culture is the biggest cult of them all.

Someone on Omegle called me a witch after I did a magic for them lol.  I thought htey were kidding, but now wondering if some of them are serious..  I took it as a complement anyways, because it means I did a good job with the illusion lol.
