Once upon a time Eugene Burger told me I only need learn 6 tricks and I'd have enough magic to sustain me for the rest of my life; he was 100% correct, and I am ever grateful for his words.

I also grabbed a copy of his book 'Mastering the Art of Magic', absorbed his sage advice like a sponge and continue to apply his wisdom to my work.

A great magical mentor indeed.

I was fortunate enough to spend an evening with Eugene in Rochester in 1997. A pivotal moment for me.

Burger's book "The Experience of Magic" is one of the most thought-provoking books I have read.

Eugene is a treasure in the magical community and also in the community of human beings. He's a wonderful person and a fantastic performer.

I remember reading in his book Secrets and Mysteries for the Close Up Entertainer that when he started professionally he had only 6 effects.  Soon after that he had 10 effects and gradually expanded his repertoire.  Would you mind elaborating a little bit on how only 6 tricks was able to sustain you your entire life?

On reflection I believe Eugene's idea was to create the belief that it was possible to begin restaurant work and strolling gigs with as little as 6 effects.  When he spoke I listened, then I took his simple words of encouragement and ran with them.  He also recommended me some great books to read, most of them were old school magic books, and this advice was also solid gold.

Around the same time I started reading Annemann's work, and came across the following sentence:

"Study to be entertaining first, and make your tricks incidental" - Theodore Annemann

This past Saturday I worked a Fall Festival performing only four tricks: Sponge ghosts, Chicago Surprise, Turbo Stick and Chop Cup. The crowds loved it.

In the past I'd be loaded to the gills with magic. Afterwards I found I only performed a few. Now I go out with a few and the faith/knowledge that that's all I need and can make it work.
