I recently posted a brief few words in the review section for the bundle download of The Paradigm Shift; Volume 1 and 2. I thought I'd share it here.

"In the postface of The Paradigm Shift Volume 1 Michael writes,

"Unfortunately, explaining the important details often requires a lot of words . . . To leave out the details would make the book easier to read, but it would do you a disservice. My suggestion is this: don’t rush through it. Take your time, make notes, and most important, think about what you read."

If this book is for you, this quote is all the review needed. If this quote puts you off, stop, read it again, only this time read it as I translate it for you as follows,

"If you genuinely want to be a better magician, this is the book for you."

I have only read through Volume 1 completely once and now I am taking my time, making notes, slowly, thinking.

This book is unlike any other I own and it is difficult to explain this difference. If you take my point above however, the answer as to whether you should buy these books, or not, is clear."

In addition there are 2 sections of theory that are absolutely top shelf. One relating to the systems used in spectators minds when watching magic and how magicians might use this to their advantage and a second relating directly to a three points to consider when addressing a sleight, move or routine. These three considerations will make that sleight or move inherently better, more deceptive and more magical. This second section is tremendous. It is one of those rare bits of simple but incisive thinking that cuts through the bullshit and gives you the real work. A theme that differentiates Michael's work and his teaching from most others.

I have so many books on my shelves that I haven't already read and yet you're talking me into buying Michael Close's work.

Thanks Gareth! [crazy]

Thanks, Gareth. I've found that reading, in general, is on the decline among my friends and family. Too many of them claim they've no time to read. This vexes me since I read some six to eight books a month.

Novels, for the most part, may be breezed through quickly enough; they're brain candy, entertainment, a distraction. Nonfiction, of which I read the most simply because I am a lifelong learner who cannot sate his desire to know everything possible, can be difficult to get through depending upon both the subject and the author's ability to translate complex subjects for the layperson. Magic books are no exception.

Reading magic books can be a trial. Mike Close is both an excellent explicator of complex ideas, and an engaging writer. I have always enjoyed reading through his Workers series, personally enjoying the depth of his thinking. I am now interested in Paradigm Shift and it's on my wish list. Robin Dawes has also spoken highly of it on the forum.

Please share more of your thoughts as you progress in the books, if you don't mind.

Gareth, thanks for sharing your comments.  Mr. Close's reputation for first-class material precedes him but it still helps to have someone we know give their opinion.

I don't know Michael, but it seems to me that he isn't only interested in making money with this publication.  He seems genuinely interested in furthering the development of magicians.  Many professionals do not publish.  Those that do, especially like Mr. Close, are to be commended for sharing their hard-won knowledge aimed at making all of us better performers.

Thanks Ray, as usual with Mr Swisse, extensive and written with genuine passion.

His magicana site is one of the best things on the net by far.
